Matthew 4:8-10 (NKJV) Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”
10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”
I wonder if Jesus wanted to say, "Thank you." This temptation reinforced what Jesus knew was His. This temptation showed Jesus something He hadn't seen in years. Matter-of-fact, He hadn't seen it in at least thirty years. The devil showed Jesus all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. Jesus wasn't tempted by the splendor of the kingdoms of earth. However, I believe, in seeing all the kingdoms of the earth, He saw beyond the splendor and to the people. Jesus wasn't interested in the things of this world, He was motivated by agape and compassion for the people of this world.
The devil should have known when Jesus was not impressed, He was different. He wasn't like all the other human beings he had lured into sin through greed. He should have been asking, "Why is He not interested in ruling all of the kingdoms of this world and having their glory?" Maybe he did ask himself, but it still didn't register with him that the Son of God was standing before him.
The devil will never be able to understand the agape and compassion God, the Father, has for us. He will never be able to comprehend the agape and compassion Jesus, the Son of God, has for us. He will never be able to grasp the agape and compassion Holy Spirit has for us. The devil's love of himself doesn't allow him to apprehend love for others. When he showed Jesus the world and all its glory, Jesus knew all these things and its glory will pass away one day. He knew the real prize was you and I. The real prize is the people of earth, those created in the image of His Father. It was good for Jesus to see from this exceedingly great height. It gave Him a better view of the people. It was similar to what He saw when He was in heaven. This added fuel to the fire of His resolve to go forward with our redemption.
Father, I am so grateful for Jesus' ability to see me. I am thankful He saw me before I was born and saw the plans You have for me. I pray to have Your eyes to see. When the devil dangles temptation before me, I hope to see beyond the temptation and the number of lives my stance upon the righteousness of Christ to the people. My stance upon truth, justice, and righteousness is for people to see You, Your love and compassion, Your wisdom and direction, and Your power and strength within. I pray I look past the temptation at the people who need me to remain standing in Christ. I pray I am motivated to stand strong to be a witness to what they can do in the strength of Christ in Jesus' name amen.
