Warriors Arise: August 31, 2022
1 Samuel 18:5 (NKJV) So David went out wherever Saul sent him, and behaved wisely. And Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul's servants.
Why is David accepted in the sight of Saul's servants? I remember a line in a movie where the princess is asking, "How do you know?" The response was, "The maids know everything." David had been one of them. He had been a servant in the king's house. He was a nobody, a shepherd boy brought in to serve Saul. He didn't brag, saying he was there to save the day, "You are not going to have to worry about the distressing spirit Saul is dealing with." He didn't tell them to do his work, because one day they would be serving him. He was one of them. He was there to serve Saul just like they were.
David didn't know there was going to be a Goliath. He didn't know how was God was going to position him, train him, or bring about making him king of Israel one day. What he did know is the door before him. David walked through the door before him. When Saul offered him to serve in his house, he served Saul well. Every time the the distressing spirit tormented Saul, David played and worshipped God. Scripture tells us every time he played the distressing spirit left Saul. Not just once-in-a-while or sometimes, but every time.
David could have said, "I have more to offer than this."
David could have told Saul, "I can be a real armor bearer. I have killed a lion and bear with my bare hands." But that was not what Saul needed at the time.
David could have said, "This is not how I want to serve you. Until you realize my potential, I am going back home to my sheep."
David could have said, "I'm not good enough to play before you, my king."
David could have said, "I only play for myself."
David could have said, "I only play for God."
How many times do we reject the door God opens before us and keep our gift to ourself? How many times has God gifted us and we won't share this gift with others? We don't see the need they have for the gift we have. What if David had kept his gift to himself? I believe he would have rejected the door God opened before him. I believe he would have missed the opportunity to relate to the servants in Saul's house. I believe he would have missed the opportunity to kill the Philistine. I believe he would have missed out on what God was setting up, not only for David, but for his family, living tax free in the land. He would not have been in the place to kill the giant. He would have missed the opportunity to lead the army to rid the land of the Philistines. Remember, the Philistines were now on the land of the Benjaminites. This is his tribe's land, given to them by God when the children of Israel came into their Promised Land.
We need to see the door God has before us. It will position us, bring freedom to our family and to those we will serve in the future. David walked through the door when he was given the opportunity to serve Saul in his palace. By doing so, he related with the servants. He was one of them and could later be respected and accepted by them.
Father, I pray I would be willing to step through the door You have before me. I pray for courage to say "Yes" to You. I can get comfortable doing what I have been comfortable doing, tending the sheep, being with family. I need to be willing to accept the open door before me, so I can serve those I had no idea needed what You have gifted me with. I pray I will honor the gift you have given me. I pray I will walk through the door and serve You well as I give the gift to others. Your desire is for me to give the gift and honor others as I serve side by side with them and we serve You together. I will honor the gift and share it with others in Jesus' name amen.
