John 3:9-21 (NKJV) Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can these things be?”
10 Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things? 11 Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”
When you ask the Teacher a question, you need to be ready for the answer. You may not have a clue what God is saying; but if He speaks, His intention is for your to learn and take what you don't know in faith. There are times when God has shared with me something my mind did not comprehend. In those moments, I tell Him, "God, I don't understand, but I receive it by faith. Teach me so I understand and it is evident in my life."
It is very similar to algebra. There are so many concepts I did not understand. I had to trust the formulas and work the problem according to the formula. I learned that I didn't have to understand why the formula worked, I just had to make sure I had to understand what the question was asking; so that I used the right formula to get the correct answer. My brain was struggling with algebra because it was a faith/trust issue. I had to trust that the formula would get me the right answers. I had to work the problem trusting my teacher. I had to use the right formula and plug in the numbers then I would get the correct answer. This is no different when God, Jesus or the Holy Spirit teaches us a concept. I do not have to know why the revelation will work, I just have to trust that if I apply the revelation God shares I will get God results.
Nicodemus didn't have to understanding how he would be saved. He just had to know that he had the opportunity to be saved and have eternal life if he would believe Jesus (believe the formula the teacher gives you and apply it).
My problem with algebra is that I wanted to completely understand why the formula worked. My teacher said, you don't need to know why it works you just need to know it works and on which question you need that particular formula. I am NOT watering down what Jesus did for us for us to be saved and have eternal life. I am speaking about how we are to trust God and apply what He has shared with us even when our mind cannot comprehend God level understanding. In high school, I was convinced that the only person who knew how the formal worked was the one who came up with the formula. The only one who knows how salvation works, being "born again", is God, because He created it. It is our doorway to redemption. It is our invitation to be a part of His family. It is the adoption papers before us. All we have to do is agree by confessing our sin and invite Jesus to me our Savior and Lord. Then to "work the problem" we listen daily to the Holy Spirit and plug in the numbers (the Scriptures, prayers, and life changes) as He directs to get God results each day. At the end of each day we have the correct answer because we applied the formula to live in relationship with Father God, growing in Christ, living by the leading of the Holy Spirit, loving on people and pushing back the enemy.
Father, You are incredible. Formula and faith, what a concept! Just like I had to trust the formulas to work in algebra, I have to trust You, as my Teacher just like I had to trust my algebra teacher. You will teach me to live as an overcomer. You will give me the formula, the Scriptures to declare victory in my life because of Christ in me. You will teach me truth from Your word and I will fulfill the dreams You have placed inside of me. I had to have algebra to graduate high school and go on to college. I have to have faith to advance your kingdom here on earth. I ask for You to come and minister Your life to me. Even if I cannot comprehend what You are teaching me, I pray I would keep an open mind and not resist what I cannot comprehend. I pray I would "work the problem", apply the concept to my life and live out the dreams You have placed within me in Jesus' name amen.
