1 Samuel 17:40-41 (NKJV) Then he took his staff in his hand; and he chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag, in a pouch which he had, and his sling was in his hand. And he drew near to the Philistine. 41 So the Philistine came, and began drawing near to David, and the man who bore the shield went before him.

There are times we are okay if the enemy stays right where he is; while we check him out. But, when he start to check your out there is a feeling of being exposed. You and I may start to feel his penetrating gaze as he sizes us up and it pierces our courage to find the fear within. When this happens how do you respond?

The enemy's piercing gaze can cause to respond in different ways.

  • We can feel our courage start to crumble.

  • We can back up slowly.

  • We can turn and run.

  • We can call on help from our friends.

  • We can remind ourselves of the battles we have already won.

  • We can remind ourselves of the battles we know God has already won.

  • We can call God's strength, courage, wisdom, strategy and power to come upon us.

There are so many times I have backed down at this very point. I knew the enemy was trying to steal from me. I knew he had been calling to me day and night, to battle him for what was already mine. I knew he had a paparazzi with him. It was as if I could hear them scoffing and laughing at me. "What are you going to do against us? Do you really think you can win? Do you think you are strong enough, smart enough, or skilled enough? Look around, no one is with you. No one cares if you win. They will not come to your aid. You are alone. What can you do against us?"

When you have stepped out against the enemy who has already squatted on what God has given you, haven't these thoughts rolled through your mind?

1 Peter 5:8 (NKJV) Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

Peter had heard the enemy. He had fallen to fear the night Jesus was put on trial. He felt the breath of the roaring lion on his neck, as he denied Christ three times. This verse is very real for Peter because he lived it. But he doesn't leave us with just a warning; he tells us what to do.

1 Peter 5:9 (NKJV) Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.

We are to resist the devil. We are not to entertain him. We are not to wait for him to overtake us with his threats. We are to be steadfast in the faith. Every Christian has at one time for another been threatened by the devil. He has tried to steal from us what Jesus came to give us. He will taunt us, try to find our point of fear and go after it. He will belittle us and make us seem weak. He is hoping we will not remember God's promise that in our weakness He is made strong.

1 Peter 5:10-11 (NKJV) But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. 11 To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

After suffering of the enemy's taunts, threats and blasphemous words against us and and our God, we will stand strong. We will go forth. We will take back what the enemy has stolen from us. We will be made like David's single stone to kill the giant. We will be established in our destiny, like David who was next taken to be trained and made a general in Saul's army. We be strengthened by the power of God within us to cut the head off of the enemy. We will be settled in the path God has for the fulfillment of our destiny.

If we will stand, if we will go forth with God, we will not cower under the gaze of the enemy. Under the gaze of the enemy, the strength of God will be solidified within us. We are His children. He searches the whole earth looking for one who is loyal to Him.

2 Chronicles 16:9a (NKJV) For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.

Father, I want to be one found to have a heart loyal to You. I want to be made strong in Your presence, in the place You have for me to train. I want to be prepared to face the enemy, whenever he shows up to steal from me. I pray for the courage to take a stand when no one else will. I pray for the peace of God to encompass me so I can be filled to overflowing with faith. I pray for Your strength to be found in me. I pray I will resist be baited by the enemy. I will enter the battlefield in Your timing after we have met and in the fullness of Your power within me. I will look and see the enemy. I will not run away. I will not wish I was somewhere else because I will know You have prepared me for this time and this place. I will walk with You and remain with You; because You lead me into triumph. No one ever won by running away and hiding. I will take a stand and advance against the enemy. When the enemy looks at me, he will see You. You are my God. You give me courage and lead me into triumph in Jesus' name amen.
