John 14:27 (NKJV) Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
We have gotten several treasures from this verse. However, let's look at the verse prior to this one.
John 14:26 (NKJV) But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
When we read verse 26, we understand Jesus was giving the disciples Holy Spirit so they would remember what He taught them. Peace I leave you, is the promise of Holy Spirit coming to the disciples after Jesus went to heaven. My peace I give you is the assurance Jesus walked in. If they didn't learn anything else, they should have learned what the Father promised, He will do. Jesus is the very representation of the Father's promise. The Father promised to send a Messiah and here He is standing in front of them.
Here He is teaching them all He knows the Father.
Here He is demonstrating how to free the captives.
Here He is bringing hope to the hopeless.
Here He is empowering each one with His love.
Here He is touching the untouchables and they are cleansed of leprosy.
Here He is speaking to the winds and waves and they obey Him.
Here He is casting out demons and people are no longer in bondage.
Here He is letting them know they will not be alone. He will send Holy Spirit. Just as Holy Spirit was with Jesus, so He will be with His disciples.
According to God, Holy Spirit is the best gift!
Luke 11:13 (NKJV) If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
Do you remember what verse come before this one?
Luke 11:9-12 (NKJV) “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 11 If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?
Jesus is sending Holy Spirit; however, we are to ask for Holy Spirit. The gift is ours but there seems to be something missed. Think of someone ordering online and the package arrives. They bought it because they had a need for it. When it arrives they put the box aside until they really need it. Days go by and it is still in the box. A month goes by and things are piled on top of the box or it is put into a closet or taken to the basement. Months or years go by and even though they needed the item they forgot they bought it so they do the best they can without it. Even though Jesus sent Holy Spirit, God says we have to ask for Him. So much so, we have to ask and keep on asking, knock and keep on knocking, seek and keep on seeking. I do not believe this is because Holy Spirit likes to play hide-and-seek. I believe it is because our hearts need to be desiring Holy Spirit and our minds need to be prepared to receive from Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit gives counsel. If we aren't ready for it, we will disregard the pearls of wisdom He shares. Holy Spirit empowers us. If we grow weary in well-doing then our heart is weak. Our heart is not linked up with Holy Spirit, the One who empowers us.
Jesus wants His disciples to be at peace, because they will not be left alone. They will have Holy Spirit. He will come after Jesus returns to heaven. Not only are they to have peace of mind because Jesus promised, they are to have peace of mind because Holy Spirit is peace. His presence removes strongholds, breaks down walls, and gets to the very core of our being. Freedom comes because peace settles every concern, worry, fear, and tempest. What does Jesus say to the winds and the waves? "Peace, Be Still." He threw a blanket of peace over the winds and the waves and they had to be still.
Father, thank You for Holy Spirit. Thank You for giving us the gift of Holy Spirit. I will ask Holy Spirit to lead, guide, comfort, give wisdom and be active in my life. I will ask Holy Spirit for His involvement in my life. I will surrender to the peace He brings into my life. I will seek Holy Spirit. I will look for Him. I will knock and keep on knocking until He is fully in my life. I will receive the gift of Holy Spirit and embrace all He has for me. I receive the gift of Holy Spirit and peace in Jesus' name amen.
