The Inheritance

Warriors Arise: March 23, 2023

1 Chronicles 16:7-18 (NKJV) On that day David first delivered this psalm into the hand of Asaph and his brethren, to thank the Lord:

8 Oh, give thanks to the Lord!

Call upon His name;

Make known His deeds among the peoples!

9 Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him;

Talk of all His wondrous works!

10 Glory in His holy name;

Let the hearts of those rejoice who seek the Lord!

11 Seek the Lord and His strength;

Seek His face evermore!

12 Remember His marvelous works which He has done,

His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth,

13 O seed of Israel His servant,

You children of Jacob, His chosen ones!

14 He is the Lord our God;

His judgments are in all the earth.

15 Remember His covenant forever,

The word which He commanded, for a thousand generations,

16 The covenant which He made with Abraham,

And His oath to Isaac,

17 And confirmed it to Jacob for a statute,

To Israel for an everlasting covenant,

18 Saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan

As the allotment of your inheritance,

God has something He has promised each one of us. Do you know what God has promised you?

In verse 18, I am drawn to the fact that David is recalling for the people what God promised their forefathers. God made a covenant with Abraham, an oath to Isaac, and then confirmed it with Jacob. God fulfilled it with Moses leading the people out of Egypt and Joshua leading the people into the land that was promised them. How much do you know about the spiritual heritage your forefathers have established for you?

Obviously, the Promised Land the Israelites were given is not the covenant God has made with us. However, Scripture is covered from front to back and page after page of promises God has for us. In this passage, David is reminding the people of God's covenant to their forefathers, which they now get to enjoy. These people standing before David now are not the ones who were in slavery. They are not the ones who walked the forty years in the wilderness. They are not the ones who conquered the inhabitants of their promised land. They are hundreds of years after the covenant was made and many generations after they have been living in the fulfillment of God' covenant. Why is David having to remind them of God's covenant?

My thoughts are because they had forgotten what God has done to establish His people. They had forgotten His covenant is lasting. They were to occupy the land, defend what God has given them and prosper under the blessing of God. They were given the land because God set it aside for them. This land they lived upon was their inheritance, the inheritance God had given them. They were to take ownership of it. However, in order to take ownership, one has to receive, occupy, build upon, multiply (expand, groom, and take care of) and defend it.

We can't thoroughly appreciate what we have been given if we do not appreciate who gave it to us and what was done for us to have it. I am incredibly appreciative of my dad and mom. My mom has been a wonderful encourager to my dad. My Dad has worked diligently for years to provide for his family. He continues to find ways to bless each of us. He gives from his garden; green beans and tomato sauce he has grown, picked and canned. This is a lot of work. You don't realize the amount of work it takes to keep up a garden, the picking and canning every couple of weeks. Then he also goes out and picks sweet corn so we can shuck, blanch, cut and bag it to put in the freezer. This too is a lot of work, but so worth it in the winter! He has invested in a travel opportunity in which he and mom, as well as my brothers, I and our families can use when we have time for a getaway. This is a tremendous blessing to each of us. I am incredibly grateful. I am not sure if we could have afforded many of the trips we have taken if my parents had not provided this travel opportunity. I realize this doesn't really compare to God's covenant but it is relatable. I honor my parents for what they have provided for me and my family. I recognize the hard work and the ability to put money aside to make this provision for us. I am humbled and grateful for their generosity. I want to provide and give opportunity for my children as well. It may not be the same way, but it will be with the same heart. I honor God for the covenant He made with the forefathers in the faith, the testimonies written in His Word and the blood of Jesus which gives me, a Gentile, the opportunity to receive each covenant of God.

God has given more than what we need to represent His love and abundance to those around us, just like He gave land, homes, and fruit on the vine to the Israelites, David is exhorting. An inheritance is given when someone dies. Jesus died for you, me and everyone else 2,000 years ago. Through His death and resurrection, He gave us an inheritance to live fruitful and empowered, occupying our domain, and expanding His kingdom here on earth until the Lord takes us home. What does that look like in your life? What kind of godly inheritance are you developing and leaving for your children?

Father, I am not sure I know what this looks like if my own life. Reveal to me the inheritance You have given me. I want to make sure I know how to be fruitful. I want to live empowered to overcome the enemy and advance Your kingdom. I want to know what is my domain to occupy and develop. You have given me so much, yet, I feel I haven't even touched the bulk of what You have given as the inheritance. Yes, Jesus, Salvation and heaven is enough. I am not asking for more. However, it would appear You give not just to provide for my future, my after-life, but for my now, in this life. I seek You and listen. I pray for understanding to receive the inheritance You have me and the expansion of the inheritance I will leave for my children in Jesus' name amen.
