Mark 10:13-16 (NKJV) Then they brought little children to Him, that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked those who brought them. 14 But when Jesus saw it, He was greatly displeased and said to them, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God. 15 Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.” 16 And He took them up in His arms, laid His hands on them, and blessed them.
It wasn't just that Jesus hugged them, which I am sure He did; but it was that He wanted to impart something to the children. When Scripture speaks of laying on of hands, there are several things possible, but they all pertain to affirming and igniting something within a person.
The laying on of hands is used for different purposes in Scripture:
Impartation
Identification
Confirmation
Releasing Blessing
Commissioning for ministry
Specifically, in Mark 10, Jesus laid His hands on them. Mark took the time to really let us see what is happening. He could have stopped with and He took them up in His arms. We all would aha know that Jesus at the very least hugged them but possible had them sitting on His lap. But when Mark goes further to say that Jesus laid His hands on them, he was referring to the Hebrew cultural action of laying on of hands. The lives of these children will forever be changed, because Jesus laid His hands on them. They may not know the significance of it, but what Jesus imparted into them will come to fruition in its time.
It is so important to hold our children and pull them in close. But the real blessing comes when we can lay our hands upon them in such a way they look in our eyes expectantly, they know something is about to happen. They can feel within the depth of them that something deep within us is touching them. They can know it before we even speak a word. There are times no words are necessary because they need most what we have within us and not the words we say. Sometimes we have to put things into words that wind up meddling with God transferring from our spirit into theirs.
I am not saying never to speak forth what is in your heart that you know they need to hear. I am saying there are times when we are to lay our hands upon our children and just allow the Spirit to pour into them. There are times when not a word needs to be spoken, because our words could cause them to miss what God is saying, what God is putting into them. Sometimes our words go beyond what God is saying. Sometimes we do not have the faith to believe what God is pouring into our children so we put ultimatums on what is happening. There are times we need to be still, and allow the Spirit in us to minister to our children's body, soul and spirit.
Jesus took the children into His arms. He broke the barrier. He said He wanted the children to come to Him; nothing and no one was to forbid them. Jesus rebuked adults so that He could receive the children. He embraced them becuase it wasn't just about the "business" of laying on of hands, it was about the children being receptive. By bringing the children into His arms, they were ready to receive whatever He released when He laid hands on them.
Have you held someone in an embrace long enough to feel the tension release from them? You then know you can start releasing the Spirit of God within you to pour into them. We are all supposed to be overflowing with God's love, we are to drip upon others. To drip upon someone, you have to be close to them.
When have you allowed God to hold you in His arms? Once you do, then you are ready for Him to lay His hands upon you.
Father, I come into Your embrace and yield to the love pouring from You. All the hurt, pain, disappointment, struggle, hardship, and trauma, I allow Your arms to melt each one away. As You reach to lay Your hands upon, I open my heart and mind to receive Your touch. I ask to be made whole again. I ask to be ready to receive the virtue coming from You hand. I ask to know the fullness of Your love and walk in it in Jesus' name amen.
