The Touch of God, part 57

Warriors Arise: September 9, 2021

Luke 8:42-47 (NKJV) But as He went, the multitudes thronged Him. 43 Now a woman, having a flow of blood for twelve years, who had spent all her livelihood on physicians and could not be healed by any, 44 came from behind and touched the border of His garment. And immediately her flow of blood stopped. 45 And Jesus said, “Who touched Me?” When all denied it, Peter and those with him said, “Master, the multitudes throng and press You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’ ” 46 But Jesus said, “Somebody touched Me, for I perceived power going out from Me.” 47 Now when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling; and falling down before Him, she declared to Him in the presence of all the people the reason she had touched Him and how she was healed immediately.

The underlined phrase seems odd to me. Remember, Luke reports how the people were thronging around Jesus. The disciples are a little put-off that Jesus would ask who touched Him since the people were all around pushing on them, trying to get to Him. Why wouldn't the woman be able to hide?

She touched the hem of His garment, not His shoulder or arm, but the hem. She was on the ground. People probably stepped on her as she stooped down and extended her hand before Jesus got out of reach. So, how was she not hidden? All those people and down on the ground reaching out to the hem of His garment. You would think it would be a clean getaway, that you would totally go unnoticed. Did the moment go into slow motion? Did Jesus stop immediately? What did the power coming out of Him feel like?

Jesus asked His disciples, "Who touched me?" and expects an answer. At lest we perceive He expects an answer, because the disciples gave Him one. Let's look at this differently. What if Jesus wasn't asking His disciples but had said to the crowd thronging them, "Who touched me?"

The moment freezes and people are looking at each other, waiting for someone to admit that they had touched Jesus. Even if they knew they had touched Him they could tell by the tone in His voice that it was a specific kind of touch and they would know they were the ones. They would know there was a connection between themselves and the touch of Jesus.

Could you imagine Jesus speaking above the crowd, a command, but it was gentle. It was with authority and you knew He wanted an answer. The disciples try to sweep the question away but Jesus is unmoving as He begins to turn and look for the one who touched Him. You knew, He was going to find the one who touched Him.

I can almost see the crowd not only stand still but even take a step back. They knew it wasn't them. They knew He was calling out to a specific person. As much as you may have wanted it to be you, there was something in you that knew you couldn't bluff in order to get an audience with Jesus.

On the flip side, this woman knew exactly who He was asking for. He was asking for her. She couldn't hide. This man, this Jesus, He knew. He knew something had happened at the same time she knew something had happened. There was no denying it. She had come this far and she wanted the healing she had received. She must see this through. She must find boldness to answer Jesus. She must confess? She must testify. Did she do something wrong? Would she be punished? But this was a miracle, so it wasn't a sin, it was an act of God. Therefore, it was a testimony. She must find the courage to testify of the miracle that had just happened in her life. Would they believer her? It doesn't matter what they believe, Jesus would believe her. He knew something happened the very moment she touched the hem of His garment and immediately she was healed.

Father, You are incredible. You notice everything. You hear my prayers. When I reach to hold Your hand, You take my hand in Yours. Your love is amazing. You are full of goodness. Right now, I ask for You to come. This new strand of COVID is dangerous. I pray people would position themselves to reach out to You, to call upon Your name, to extend their hand to touch Your garment. This woman had been in hiding for 12 years and now because of one touch she cannot hide. She has been healed. The power of God flows through her and heals every part of her. There are those who have never followed You, have never called on the name of Jesus or honored God with their lives. I pray they would turn to You now. I pray they would reach out and touch You with their heart. I pray their mind would comprehend Yourlove for them. I ask for your healing to flow from heaven into their lives. I pray they would know Your power and testify of what You are doing in their lives, because of what You have already done. I pray for those who need strength to receive Your touch and be made whole in Jesus' name amen.
