Matthew 9:27-30 (NKJV) When Jesus departed from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out and saying, “Son of David, have mercy on us!” 28 And when He had come into the house, the blind men came to Him. And Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to Him, “Yes, Lord.” 29 Then He touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith let it be to you.” 30 And their eyes were opened.
With these blind men, Jesus allows them to follow after Him. Jesus doesn't stop to heal them or call them out of the crowd as He has done before. For these two blind me, they follow Jesus, crying out and saying, "Son of David, have mercy on us!" Why does Jesus heal in different ways?
Maybe with these two Jesus needed to get into a more private place. Maybe at this time, the Pharisees were already trying to lay hold of Jesus to kill Him. There are several times when Jesus slipped through the crowd and the Pharisees could not lay hold of Him. After healing these two blind men, Jesus sternly warns them not to tell anyone. Why would you want it a secret, unless you didn't want to be found.
Maybe Jesus was in a place that people didn't recognize who He was. However, for some reason, these two blind men, even though they couldn't see with their eyes they knew who Jesus was. They called Him "Son of David." Maybe angels told them or they overheard Jesus and His disciples talking as they passed. Either way, they would have needed to know of Jesus prior to that moment. Their hearts would have been in anticipation.
How many times had they talked, "If Jesus comes by I am going to be healed."
How many times had they told one another, "If you hear anyone who knows where Jesus is, let me know. I'm going."
Or said to each other, "We must listen carefully so we do not miss any sign of Jesus."
Scripture does not tell us if anyone brought these blind men. I imagine them stumbling a few times, helping each other up and trying to listen carefully to the way Jesus went. I imagine them falling behind and listening for a sign, a voice, something to let them know which street Jesus had gone down and which house He had gone into. They could feel it in their bones, the King, the Son of David is near. The shaking in their legs and the trembling of their hands must have been almost uncontrollable as they caught His voice. They knew they needed one touch of God and they would be healed.
Would you be so persistent to find Jesus? To receive His touch? The pursuit may not be easy. It may have a few turns. You may have to listen closely, but He promises, those who seek Him will find Him.
Father, I ask to hear Your voice. I wait in great anticipation to know You are near, even passing by. I pray my ears to be in tune with Your voice. I pray my heart be full of passion to pursue You. I ask for courage to get back up when I stumble. I pray I would be bold to call after You. I pray for strength in my bones, in every part of my body to seek You until I find You. I pray for boldness to declare who You are. I pray for Your mercy to receive me and my request in Jesus' name amen.
