Warriors Arise: October 17, 2021
Mark 9:14-27 (NKJV) And when He came to the disciples, He saw a great multitude around them, and scribes disputing with them. 15 Immediately, when they saw Him, all the people were greatly amazed, and running to Him, greeted Him. 16 And He asked the scribes, “What are you discussing with them?” 17 Then one of the crowd answered and said, “Teacher, I brought You my son, who has a mute spirit. 18 And wherever it seizes him, it throws him down; he foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid. So I spoke to Your disciples, that they should cast it out, but they could not.” 19 He answered him and said, “O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him to Me.” 20 Then they brought him to Him. And when he saw Him, immediately the spirit convulsed him, and he fell on the ground and wallowed, foaming at the mouth. 21 So He asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. 22 And often he has thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” 23 Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” 24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” 25 When Jesus saw that the people came running together, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “Deaf and dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him and enter him no more!” 26 Then the spirit cried out, convulsed him greatly, and came out of him. And he became as one dead, so that many said, “He is dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose.
Talk about chaos! Jesus is on the mountain praying, the disciples are trying to help the boy, but nothing they do is working. The boy is still being controlled by this demon. The father is trying to hold himself together. Maybe he is a stoic-type so he is standing by watching, but then Jesus arrives and gets the low-down on the situation. The father sums it up and Jesus calls for them to bring the boy to Him. When the demon sees Jesus he begins to act out! Whether he is trying to intimidate Jesus, have one last hoorah before it is removed, or is trying to kill the boy before Jesus can cast it out, we don't know. When we face demons they don't go away quietly. They aren't quiet about things. They enjoy all the attention they can get. They like to intimidate and to cause doubt. They want to make it seem like they have more power than what they really do. Oddly, this demon can't speak, but it has learned to be controlling in its own way.
My advice, if you ever come up against a demon, make sure you remember: it is not your power that will defeat it, but the power of Christ in you. You speak as a child of God, with the authority of Jesus Christ and with the leading of the Holy Spirit. According to Scripture, demons don't mess around. If you are going to throw around words without the power of God then you are doing to get a rude awakening.
Acts 19:11-20 (NKJV) Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul, 12 so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them. 13 Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.” 14 Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so. 15 And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?” 16 Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17 This became known both to all Jews and Greeks dwelling in Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. 18 And many who had believed came confessing and telling their deeds. 19 Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, and it totaled fifty thousand pieces of silver. 20 So the word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed.
Paul knew and operated in the power of God but the itinerant Jewish exorcists did not know Jesus. They tried to declare the power someone else had, without having the same power themselves. God will not be mocked.
Galatians 6:7-8 (NKJV) Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.
Father, I want to know You and the power of Christ You have given me. I position myself before You to sow into the Spirit and receive of the Spirit. I embrace my responsibility as Your child to know You, Your power, and reap of the Spirit. I ask for You to strengthen me to have courage to activate the power of the Spirit if demons that rear their ugly head. I pray to be ready to free the captives and strengthen the weary. I ask for understanding of Your ways so I know how to bring freedom to those in demonic bondage and offer new life in Christ. I pray for Your kingdom to come and Your will be done. Jesus didn't allow this boy to be controlled or to be a host for the demon anymore. Jesus administered the power of God to remove the demon and set this boy free. This boy was given a new life in Christ. Jesus told His disciples this kind only comes out through prayer and fasting. I ask to be ready, having already been in a place of prayer and fasting in order to release Your power to bring freedom to others in Jesus name amen.
