Matthew 6:9a In this manner, therefore, pray:
Our Father in heaven,
I just can't go any further. "Our Father in heaven," is powerful. Close your eyes, just for a moment and think of Jesus saying this, "Our Father in heaven." He is speaking on behalf of all the disicples and those with Him when He uses "our". He is including the discples as a part of His family and God, His Father as thier Father.
When you begin praying, can you close your eye and picture Jesus saying this with You sitting at His feet or in the crowd with His disicples. They were hand picked by the Father. Jesus prayed all night seeking direction from His Father on who to invite to be His disicples. He was trusting God to direct His path. He needed to hear His Father speak to Him. Scripture records Jesus, only did what He saw His Father do.
Jesus was in tune with His Father. He completely trusted Him. This can be a difficult concept. I want to give you something I shared at the Overflow Gathering, Saturday, on Father's Love. If you will receive it, You will have a deeper relationship with the Father than you have ever had before.
One of the reasons we do not give the value to the first line of this prayer is because we struggle to separate our earthly father from our view of our Heavenly Father. There is no comparison. No earthly man can even come close to your Heavenly Father. Can you live perfect as God? Then how come you insist that your earthly father has to be perfect in order for you to know God?
My dad can do a lot of things very well, but without Christ, he can do nothing. There was a time I blamed my dad for all sorts of troubles going on in my life and things he didn't even know about. I truly thought he was as fault, even though there were some things, I know, he didn't even know about. I was hurt and someone needed to take responsiblity for my hurt. The problem is, I should have been going to my heavenly Father. There were wounds from my past that needed the healing touch of God. My dad couldn't change anything that had happened to me. Only God could heal me, restore me, and make me whole.
Thankfully, God stepped in and got ahold of me. He revealed how I was expecting my dad to be Him. As great as my dad is, he will never be God. God is better than my dad has ever been. Even though I have a pretty amazing Dad, he has his shortcomings, as I get older, they get fewer. Here's what happened. In the area in which my dad wasn't perfect, I saw God as not being perfect.
Again, my dad is not God. Therefore, I was wrong to compare my dad to God. God is perfect in all of His ways. My dad is human. He needs to be given grace. I am fortunate to have a pretty great Dad, even in his shortcomings. Some have a taller hurdle to cross than I did.
There is no comparrison. God makes Himself available for You to know Him. The more you know God the more you will be able to release your Dad from being perfect and offer grace. The bonus is that your faith will grow exponentially. You will have not hangups with God.
You will see His perfection and rise confidnet to face any foe that rises up against you.
You will see His love cover and cleanse a multitude of your sins. You will see His peace disperse your anxiety.
You will see His delight as He celebrates you.
You will be empowered to pray the impossible.
You will be strenghtened to perservere through breakthrough.
You will take His outstretched hand and rise to your feet.
You will walk in your desitny.
Until You and I separate the view of our relationship we have with our earthlly father, his shortcomings and failures, from our heavenly Father, who is perfect in every way, never sinning aginst us, making a way for us, showing us favor, getting us out of disasterous times, and lifting us up out of the pit we so willingly stepped in, we will not understand the fullness of Father's love.
Father, I struggled for so long. I couldn't trust You because I had hangups with my dad. I expected my dad to be perfect, like You. I wanted him to take responsiblity for all that was going wrong in my life. I didn't turn to You because I was avoiding the truth. You will hear me. You will speak to me. You will come to me in my most deseprate times. You are always available, if I will turn my face to You and listen. You cheer me on and celebrate me. You make time for me. Forgive me for comparing my dad to You. I release my dad from all the times I blamed him for not being perfect. He is human and is not You. I was wrong to hold him in contempt and expect him to be perfect. I release him to be human and bless him in his relationship with You. I pray You would help me separate any wrong thoughts of where I have alinated my dad because he had to be perfect for me to accept him. I bless my Dad to be eveyrthing You created Him to be. I bless my Dad know Your goodness, wisdom, love, accpetance, value, and dreams You have for him. I pray he embrace everyting You have for him in Jesus' name amen.
