Warriors Arise: January 16, 2024
Matthew 6:16-18 “Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
The caution in verse sixteen can prevent us from the obvious. Jesus isn't telling them to fast. He is speaking to something they already do:
when you fast,
but you,
when you fast,
your head,
your face,
so that you,
but to your Father,
and your Father
you
Jesus wants their fasting to be different. He must be speaking to something He saw, people wanting the honor and praise of people because they are fasting. He wants His disciples to make fasting personal, between them and their Father.
No one else needs to be involved. No one else needs to know. Why? Why would this be something to do in secret?
I believe it is because when we enter into a fast it is entering into a deeper, more intimate relationship with God. We will forsake the necessities of life in order to draw near to God, in order to know Him as Father. There is a preciousness to fasting. It is tender and sacrificial. When we fast with the right attitude it is Agape toward our God.
Father in heaven, hallowed be Your Name. You are Holy and precious. You kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give me today my daily bread. I will receive Your word as bread for my body, soul and spirit. You are my strength. I lay down my life and fellowship withYou. This is our time. It is not to be shared with others. It is for You and I. Thank You for Your tenderness and love. I receive from You in Jesus' name amen.
