Matthew 4:8-10 (NKJV) Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”
10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”
I really enjoy verse ten. Too many times I felt like I had to endure the torment of the enemy. I felt I had to take every blow until he decided to go pick on someone else. This verse, along with several others, would demonstrate otherwise. Three strikes and the devil is out!
You and I do not have to continue to allow the enemy to test us, call us to fight, or even sit down to make a truce. We can tell Satan to go and he has to go. It is the power of God within us as well as the authority Jesus gave each believer. When we operate in that authority and activate the power of God from within us, what we say causes the enemy to move on.
This is freedom. It is the freedom Jesus gives us when He fulfilled Isaiah 61.
Isaiah 61:1-2 (NKJV )
“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, Because the Lord has anointed Me
To preach good tidings to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives,
And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord
Jesus came and quoted this passage when He spoke at the temple. He wanted us to know we are no longer a slave to this world or the devil. We have been made free by the good news of Jesus Christ. He has proclaimed liberty to each one of us. However, for freedom to remain we have to activate the power of God from within us. We have to use the Word of God against the temptations of the devil. We have to end the battle.
James 4:7 (NKJV) Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
Jesus demonstrated how to establish freedom from being taken captive to sin. Jesus did what God told Him to do. He allowed the Holy Spirit to take Him to the wilderness to be tested. Jesus was submitted to God and His plan. Jesus resisted the devil with Scripture. Not just once, but three times. Then Jesus told the devil to go and he left. Three strikes and you're out. Jesus sent the devil to the bus. It was time for him to go.
Father, thank You for sending Jesus to be our Savior. I am incredibly grateful He spent time here to show us how to defeat the enemy. Too many times I allow the enemy to come in and intimidate me. I allow him to stick around way too long. I pray I would recognize the enemy quickly and speak Your Word swiftly and accurately. Thank you for the authority to tell the enemy to go. Thank You for the power to be bold and courageous to tell the enemy to leave. I will walk according to Your Word and live in the freedom You have given me in Jesus' name amen.
