1 Chronicles 16:7-24 (NKJV) On that day David first delivered this psalm into the hand of Asaph and his brethren, to thank the Lord:
8 Oh, give thanks to the Lord!
Call upon His name;
Make known His deeds among the peoples!
9 Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him;
Talk of all His wondrous works!
10 Glory in His holy name;
Let the hearts of those rejoice who seek the Lord!
11 Seek the Lord and His strength;
Seek His face evermore!
12 Remember His marvelous works which He has done,
His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth,
13 O seed of Israel His servant,
You children of Jacob, His chosen ones!
14 He is the Lord our God;
His judgments are in all the earth.
15 Remember His covenant forever,
The word which He commanded, for a thousand generations,
16 The covenant which He made with Abraham,
And His oath to Isaac,
17 And confirmed it to Jacob for a statute,
To Israel for an everlasting covenant,
18 Saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan
As the allotment of your inheritance,”
19 When you were few in number,
Indeed very few, and strangers in it.
20 When they went from one nation to another,
And from one kingdom to another people,
21 He permitted no man to do them wrong;
Yes, He rebuked kings for their sakes,
22 Saying, “Do not touch My anointed ones,
And do My prophets no harm.”
23 Sing to the Lord, all the earth;
Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day.
24 Declare His glory among the nations,
His wonders among all peoples.
David is exhorting all the people to make God known. The way he speaks to the people, is as a command. Proclaim the good news, declare His glory among the nations, and His wonders among all peoples. David wanted God to be known all over the world. He already had a vision to make God's name great, to make Him known. I don't believe it was to brag that they were better, but so anyone who would believe, would become one of God's chosen people.
In their culture, it was so important to know who you came from, your family line. He would have known the story of Rahab the harlot a great, great, great grandmother to him. She was of Jericho. She was not born a Hebrew. He would have know his great, great grandmother Ruth, who was a Moabite. He knew foreigners could be grafted into God's people. Do you remember what Rahab tells the Hebrew spies?
Joshua 2:8-13 (NKJV) Now before they lay down, she came up to them on the roof, 9 and said to the men: “I know that the Lord has given you the land, that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land are fainthearted because of you. 10 For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were on the other side of the Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed. 11 And as soon as we heard these things, our hearts melted; neither did there remain any more courage in anyone because of you, for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath. 12 Now therefore, I beg you, swear to me by the Lord, since I have shown you kindness, that you also will show kindness to my father's house, and give me a true token, 13 and spare my father, my mother, my brothers, my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.”
The people of Jericho had heard the good news of God; He saves, delivers and makes a place for them. Since God grafted David's great, great, great grandmother and his great, great grandmother into His family then there could be others who would believe God and make God theirs. He knew it was possible. He was a mixed breed. He wasn't even 100% Hebrew and yet, God chose him to be king over His people. Nothing is impossible for God. His love is amazing. He is looking for a heart pursuing Him. His desires none to perish.
John 3:16-17 (NKJV) For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
Again, David is exhorting the people to do something that we do not hear about until Jesus, Himself is telling the people. God's desire is for none to perish. Jesus' desire is for all to come to the saving knowledge He offers and receive it. They want everyone to hear of the greatness of God and walk in His ways.
David wants the people to tell about the greatness of God just as Jesus wants His disciples to tell of the greatness of God.
Matthew 28:18-20 (NKJV) And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
Father, I lift up Your name today. You are worthy of my praise. Today is like every other day. You have been with me. You have steadied my heart and given me power to overcome. You have revealed wrong mindsets, given me courage to share Your heart, and love without reservation. I will testify of Your greatness. Life isn't perfect, but I am perfectly loved by You. I will testify so others will know the extension of Your love and the fullness of Your power. I will praise Your name and give you glory and honor in Jesus' name amen.
