Today is Your Day, Part 14

Warriors Arise: May 24, 2021

1 Samuel 16:12-13 (NKJV) And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!” 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward.

From yesterday, we recognize so much happened to call David into the destiny God has place inside of him. David was faithful tending the sheep. He hadn't been called to prepare himself for the sacrifice. He was forgotten in all the hubbub of Samuel, the prophet in the land arriving in time for the sacrifice. Samuel was faithful to wait for God to give direction on who he was to anoint as the next king of Israel. Samuel had thought surely it was going to be one of Jesse's other sons. They looked the part; however, Israel had gone that route and it didn't turn out for them. Saul had stood head and shoulders above everyone in the crowd. He looked like he would be the king they could follow, his height might have caused people to respect him. However, height doesn't mean everything. As we have learned in our Bible, Saul did not rise to be the leader of God's people. He did not honor God nor respect His guiding him as the king. Now, God wanted a new king. He wanted a king who would lead from a position of purpose given to him by God. He continues to look for people who will readily align themselves with the purpose He has placed inside of them and stop at nothing to fulfill it.

2 Chronicles 16:9 (NKJV) For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him...

God had found such a man in David. He continues to look today. David should not be the exception, he should be the norm. It shouldn't be that difficult for God to find people whose hearts are loyal to Him. David was anointed as the next king of Israel. The anointing is important. It was a sign of the Lord's called, chosen and commissioned leader. However, in order for each one of us to fulfill the purpose of the anointing we need something else.

We need the Spirit of the Lord.

Luke 3:21-22 (NKJV) When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. 22 And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”

Luke 4: 14a (NKJV)Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit

Luke 4:16-21 (NKJV) So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17 And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written: 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” 20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

Jesus hung up His deity when he came as a baby to earth. He came, showing each one of us what we would need in order to fulfill our destiny. Jesus could not have fulfilled His destiny until the Spirit of God came upon Him. Jesus being our example, how much more so do we need the Spirit of God upon us?

David needed the Spirit of God to come upon him to fulfill his destiny. So did Saul, but the he rejected God, the prophet God sent to him, and the leading of the Spirit of God; therefore, the spirit of the LORD departed from him (1 Samuel 16:14a).

1 Thessalonians 5:19-20 (NKJV)19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies.

King Saul's time was before Jesus came to earth. Since Jesus has come as our Savior and now resides in heaven, I'm not sure if I believe the Spirit of God leaves us when we reject Him; however, I do believe we can lock Him up on a prison sandpit a muzzle over His mouth. Therefore, we do not get the benefits of the Spirit because we don't want wisdom, comfort, guidance, or power from God. I believe Christians are powerless over the enemy because they have not sought after and embraced the Spirit of God coming upon them.

Father, I ask for the Spirit of God to come upon my life. I pray for the infilling of the Spirit. I am leaky and need a continual filling of the Spirit of God. I want to be prepared for when You look over the earth to find one loyal to You that I will be that one. I want to be ready to fulfill the destiny You have placed inside of me. I want to be ready for Your Spirit to come upon me and empower me to overcome the enemy, make decisions based on Your wisdom, and release Your kingdom here on earth. Spirit of God, I need You. I need You to speak to me, to guide me, to give me courage to walk in all God has purposed in my heart to do. Come and lead me to fulfilling my destiny in Jesus' name amen.
