Warriors Arise: June 7, 2021
Ruth 2:1-13 (NKJV) There was a relative of Naomi's husband, a man of great wealth, of the family of Elimelech. His name was Boaz. 2 So Ruth the Moabitess said to Naomi, “Please let me go to the field, and glean heads of grain after him in whose sight I may find favor.” And she said to her, “Go, my daughter.” 3 Then she left, and went and gleaned in the field after the reapers. And she happened to come to the part of the field belonging to Boaz, who was of the family of Elimelech. 4 Now behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem, and said to the reapers, “The Lord be with you!” And they answered him, “The Lord bless you!” 5 Then Boaz said to his servant who was in charge of the reapers, “Whose young woman is this?”
6 So the servant who was in charge of the reapers answered and said, “It is the young Moabite woman who came back with Naomi from the country of Moab. 7 And she said, ‘Please let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves.’ So she came and has continued from morning until now, though she rested a little in the house.” 8 Then Boaz said to Ruth, “You will listen, my daughter, will you not? Do not go to glean in another field, nor go from here, but stay close by my young women. 9 Let your eyes be on the field which they reap, and go after them. Have I not commanded the young men not to touch you? And when you are thirsty, go to the vessels and drink from what the young men have drawn.” 10 So she fell on her face, bowed down to the ground, and said to him, “Why have I found favor in your eyes, that you should take notice of me, since I am a foreigner?” 11 And Boaz answered and said to her, “It has been fully reported to me, all that you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband, and how you have left your father and your mother and the land of your birth, and have come to a people whom you did not know before. 12 The Lord repay your work, and a full reward be given you by the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings you have come for refuge.” 13 Then she said, “Let me find favor in your sight, my lord; for you have comforted me, and have spoken kindly to your maidservant, though I am not like one of your maidservants.”
Ruth asked her mother-in-law if she could go glean heads of grain from the fields. She was trying to make provision for herself and her mother-in-law. Gleaning heads of grain was not an easy task. Once the harvesters came through and bundled up the bushels of barely still on the stalk then the widows and others could come look through the fields for fallen heads of grain.
Could you imagine how difficult it would be to find these heads of grain on the ground?
Could you imagine how long it would take to find enough to make one loaf of bread?
Could you imagine the remarks of people as you worked, especially for Ruth, a foreigner?
Could you imagine being the last of the last to glean through the field?
Ruth needed favor. Harm could have come to her. Boaz actually tells her that he has commanded no one touch her. Ruth knew she was putting herself in danger and so did Naomi; but they needed to eat. Ruth tells Naomi she will glean in the fields where she has found favor. Ruth knew what she needed. She needed favor.
Boaz comes to see how harvesting is going in his fields. He asked about Ruth and the servants tell him of her diligence to glean. He has heard of how she is taking care of Naomi. He offers for her to continue gleaning in his fields and now directly behind the harvesters. He extends his command to give her protection and invites her drink water from what he provides for his menservants. Boaz extends kindness to Ruth. She has found favor with the master of the field. She has water to drink, protection, and can glean blind the harvesters. Her faithfulness to take care of Naomi and diligence to work has brought her favor.
Father, thank You for the ability to work. Thank Your for the work ethic I have to do well in my work. As I go out each day, I ask to find favor. I ask for be given the opportunity to provide for my family and those in need. You word bless the work of my hands and I receive that promise. Thank You for Your lovingkindness to provide for me and my family. Thank You for the protection. Thank You for keeping me from harms way. Thank You for Your amazing love. It goes before me and I work diligently within its boundaries. Thank You for Your provision, Living Water. Thank You for giving me Your Word as I go forth in the work You have given. Thank You for giving me favor where I work. You have positioned me to pick up behind the harvesters. You have placed me in the position where I will have the greatest return for my efforts. You bless the work of my hands, protect me from danger, and provide me with Living Water to renew my strength. Come and release Your favor upon me in Jesus' name amen.
