Today is Your Day, part 45

Warriors Arise: June 23, 2021

Matthew 4:5-7 (NKJV) Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ” 7 Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’

Oh, the patience Jesus has with the one who betrayed His Father. There is not even an explanation point after He corrects satan. But I did chuckle when "again" jumped out at me. I checked the Scripture from the first attempt to tempt Jesus. There is no "again", so I am thinking when Jesus says, "It is written again..." He wasn't referring to the particular verse He was about to quote but to the fact that He was using Scripture to deflect the twist on Scripture satan was spewing, "Yet, again, you do not understand, Lucifer." But if Jesus had used Lucifer's given name that would have been a dead give away. He would have heard Jesus call his name before, the tone, the inflection, and authority of His address would have totally given Him away.

I do not like to be in heated discussions over Scripture. Either someone has the same understanding or they don't. The understanding or revelation of Scripture isn't like learning your alphabet so you can learn words, so that you can read. Scripture is God breathed. God inspired people to write history and all of its lessons so people could learn through example. As we see God intervene for His people, we understand He will intervene for us. As we see God make a way out for His people, we can believe He will do the same for us. As we see God discipline His children, we can expect His love will compel Him to discipline us. As we see God call people into doing great exploits with Him, we can expect God to call us to do the miraculous in our generation.

When Jesus says, "It is written again..." He is letting the tempter know He will not be confused by the misuse and lack of understanding of the Word. Satan didn't understand God's love nor did he comprehend His authority in heaven; therefore, why would he know the proper use of Scripture. Jesus saying, "again" is a little like a parent telling a child, "Do I have to tell you again?" Why, because it should be understood what the parent wants. They have told their child a hundred times. Why? Because satan would never understand. If he couldn't understand God's love in heaven, he wasn't going to understand it after thousands of years of rebellion and hatred toward God.

Father, I ask for understanding. I want ears to hear. I do not want You to have to tell me something twice or for the hundredth time. I want to hear You voice, comprehend what You are saying and apply the context to my life. I ask for You to open up my ears. I do not want a rebellious heart that throws around Your Word without understanding or care. I ask for You to speak Your truths to me so I can apply them to my life and live the victorious life Jesus did. I want to overcome the tempter's lure to sin because I have taken Your Word and buried into my heart. I want to have wisdom from my Father because I have written Your Word on my heart. I want my mind wallpapered with Your Word so confusion is impossible. I want to know Your Word and use it against the Tempter. You are my God and I love Your Word. Thank you for drawing me to Your Word. Use it strengthen me against the Tempter's lies in Jesus' name amen.
