Today is Your Day, part 8

Warriors Arise: May 18, 2021

Matthew 14:13-21 (NKJV) When Jesus heard it, He departed from there by boat to a deserted place by Himself. But when the multitudes heard it, they followed Him on foot from the cities. 14 And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick. 15 When it was evening, His disciples came to Him, saying, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is already late. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages and buy themselves food.” 16 But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.17 And they said to Him, “We have here only five loaves and two fish.” 18 He said, “Bring them here to Me.” 19 Then He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass. And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitudes. 20 So they all ate and were filled, and they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments that remained. 21 Now those who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Facts to note:

  • Jesus is taking them to a deserted place so they can rest.

  • They had not eaten.

  • Multitudes knew Jesus and ran from foot from all the cities.

  • Jesus was moved with compassion; therefore, He ministered to the need of the multitude.

  • The disciples were still tired and hungry. They wanted Jesus to send the people away.

  • Jesus tell His disciples to give the people something to eat.

  • The disciples do not have anything but Jesus sends them to find how many loaves.

  • A boy had 5 loaves and 2 fishes.

  • A miracle happened and 5,000 people ate until they were full.

  • 12 baskets were remaining.

There is more to what happened that amazing day. However, I do not want you to miss who's day this was. In writing this series, Today is Your Day, we are seeing where God is moving in people's lives to heal the blind, recover all that had been stolen, see God's hand upon a Hebrew baby to be brough tup to lead millions of people, etc. This part of history is recored in three of the Gospels. Who's day was it?

  • Jesus, who demonstrated the miraculous over multiplying the loaves and fishes?

  • The disciples, who saw the miracle as Jesus broke the bread and it didn't run out, tore the fish and it didn't run out. How they picked up 12 baskets of leftovers from feeding 5,000 with only 5 fishes and 2 loaves?

  • The 5,000 who had no food being fed? They didn't get scraps. They ate until they were full and there was leftover.

  • The boy, who gave his 5 loaves and 2 fishes?

In my mind everyone benefitted from one person. This day is the boy's day. Today is his day. Could you imagine being the one who gave your meal to the disciples to take to Jesus? It would have been cool to think I gave food to the Messiah. To think that what I brought fed His need. I do not know if the boy knew why the disciples were asking for food but it is pretty amazing to think that he was the beginning of a miracle.

How many times in your life has God asked what You had? Jesus sent the disciples to go see who had food. The boy didn't have a lot, it wouldn't have even fed Jesus and His disciples. The boy was going to have to give up dinner for himself and maybe his dad by giving the 5 loaves and two fishes to the disciples.

  • Would you have kept it for yourself? They should have brought their own food.

  • Would you have kept it because you decided it wasn't enough? This wouldn't even feed Jesus and His disciples.

  • Would you have kept it because maybe others were willing to pay you? The disciples did not offer to pay, they were asking for the boy to give.

Why should the boy go without when others didn't plan ahead. How is that his problem? Today was his day. He was going to be the beginning of a miracle. His willingness to give what he had, when logically it wasn't enough, flung the door open for a miracle to take place.

Do you think so little of what you have that you can't see what God can do with it when He blessed it? When you see how big God is and stop reasoning in your own mind, you will be a part of the miracle He is about to do. When God asks, be willing. We don't need to think, we need to respond, "Yes, Lord, what I have is yours". Then you will be a part of what God intends to do. God could be using what you have to bring for miracle for 5,000 others.

Father, You are amazing. This boy, willing to give what he had. We do not know if he had already eaten or if he was giving everything he came with. It doesn't matter. He gave what he had. Even though it would not feed Jesus and His disciples, he gave. I ask to be like the boy. I want to hear what You are asking and give from what I have. I do not want reaonin mown mind as to what You could do with what You are asking me to give. I want to give and then You are free to doing with it as You desire. All I have is Your's and I surrender what You have given me to bless You. I ask for ears to hear what You are asking. I ask for a quickness in my response to giving what You are asking. I ask to release everything without strings attached or expectations of what I will get in return. You are my King and I will give to You what You ask no matter how small or insignificant I think it may be. You are my God and I will give to You as You ask in Jesus' name amen.
