We All Need

Warriors Arise: August 22, 2022

1 Samuel 18:3 (NKJV) Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.

How do I get from here to there? Is my potential evident or do I hide it? God created us to be intertwined with others. We are not meant to live life alone. We are stronger together. A team of runners will always out run an individual. David needed someone to notice him. He didn’t just need someone, but the right one. He needed a mentor or a coach who would train him and get him battle ready. A coach is someone who sees potential in an individual and is ready to pour everything he has into him. He needed a coach who was skilled in the very areas he was not.

Jonathan saw something in David he wanted to invest in. This is the difference between good coaches and great coaches. The coach has observed and sees particular characteristics he knows he can develop further.

To be ready for a great coach we need to be teachable and fearless.

Teachability is learned when an individual recognizes they are not the end all, be all. They realize they didn’t get to where they are on their own. Most importantly, they realize God’s involvement in their life. One who is full of pride is unteachable. No coach will want to commit their time and energy into them.

The level of one’s fearlessness is revealed when they are faced with adversity. There are three things that can happen when we are faced with adversity: 1. We curl up and a take a beating. 2. We run and hide hoping it will all be better in time. 3. In Christ, we stand, resist and overcome the adversity. A great coach is looking for the one who will stand, resist and overcome. That is what David did when he heard Goliath spew his challenge to Saul’s army. That is what drew Jonathan to David.

David needed a coach who was skilled in battle and had a similar heart to rid the land of the Philistines. You and I also need a great coach so we can be prepared for what God has for us to accomplishing our future. David needed a great coach who saw the potential within him. David needed a great coach that would take him where he couldn’t get on his own. He needed access to military weapons and armor. He had trained with his sling and a stone day after day when he was tending his father’s sheep. Jonathan didn’t want David to just be another shepherd fighting without weapons. Earlier in Scripture, in a previous battle against the Philistines, we see where the only people who had weapons were Saul and Jonathan. But he would be fighting more hand-to-hand combat in the near future. He needed a great coach who would get him ready. I am sure Jonathan was thinking it would be nice to have someone who I knew could fight and trust to have my back when the battle returns.

I was thinking today of the Scripture telling us we are not to despise small beginnings. David was a shepherd, a very lowly beginning. His brother even makes fun of him “tending those few sheep.” David developed his accuracy with his sling and a stone. He didn’t have the weapons of a warrior. David developed himself as a warrior with the little he had. Jonathan saw something in him. Jonathan chose to be David’s coach.

We all need a great coach to take us to the next level. What we have become is our beginning. Where we will go from there is opportunity. We need someone who will convenant with us and coach us, develop our weaknesses into strengths. God has a great coach for us. God has someone who will invest in us. God has someone who is not intimidated by our gifting, ability or courage. God has someone who will teach us.

Father, thank you for the talent You have given me. I will develop them. I will be ready to use them when they are needed. I will allow myself to be taught and continue to step into being fearless. I know You are for me. You desire for me to be prepared for what You have in my future. I need a great coach, I need someone who will covenant with me. I need someone who is not intimidated by me. I will submit to them and embrace what they have to teach me. I will be prepared for my future in Jesus’ name amen.
