What Are Your Motives

Warriors Arise: March 10, 2021

Daniel 6:4-5 (NKJV) So the governors and satraps sought to find some charge against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find no charge or fault, because he was faithful; nor was there any error or fault found in him. 5 Then these men said, “We shall not find any charge against this Daniel unless we find it against him concerning the law of his God.”

They watched and they knew Daniel didn't do anything wrong. They had to create the conflict. Why do people respond this way? Why do we get caught up in someone else's success and allow ourselves to be drawn into compromising our integrity. Was it envy? Was it jealousy? Were they provoked because of the wisdom Daniel possessed?

Oddly, why didn't they recognize where Daniel's wisdom came from? Instead of seeking to have the same wisdom as Daniel, they sought to have him removed permanently. They came up with the entire plan. It wasn't just that Daniel would be flogged or imprisoned but he would be devoured in a den of lions. How long had they wanted Daniel to be removed from office?

When we allow jealousy and envy to grow within our hearts eventually it will take over all reason. Think of the different times when you were jealous of someone else. It could have been their promotion, recognition, admiration, authority, looks, or things they acquired. When our jealousy is left unchecked it grows to something not only ugly, but evil. We speak hate over the person when they didn't even do anything to us. Our mind makes up things that they didn't say to us. Our mind believes that they treated us a certain way when nothing happened. We can wish them ill. We can wish disaster upon them. We can hope that whatever they got will break. We can wish the skinny person to grow fat and ugly. We can wish the accomplished person to get injured or demoted. Sadly, we may not even think there is anything wrong in allowing our mind to entertain such thoughts.

When we can't see the truth, we have opened the door to lies. What did they do to deserve our evil plotting and cursing words? They excelled. They planned. They prepared. Therefore, they received according to the effort they put in to their accomplishment. But Daniel took it a step further.

Remember, last week we talked about who else at the feast heard Daniel read and interpret the writing the wall and was affected by what Daniel said. Most of the these men would have been there. They had been asked to read and interpret the writing on the wall. Yet, they couldn't. They should have known Daniel was given this ability, this supernatural interpretation because of his God. Instead of learning of Daniel's God, instead of submitting to a relationship with Daniel's God, they went after Daniel. Do you not find it odd that they all heard, and some of them saw, the finger of God write on the wall and they have no fear in going after Daniel? Do you not find it odd that they all believe some god will protect its followers yet they have not problem trying to interfere in Daniel's relationship with God and how God used Daniel as His ambassador? Their jealousy had blinded them to what they were trying to do. They were going after Daniel without recognizing God's hand of protection upon him. Sometimes people are untouchable because the hand of God is protecting them, positioning them to represent Him.

God demonstrated the impossible through Daniel and these men should have had a clue. Yet, they give into their fleshly desire of wanting what Daniel earned. Their appetite to feed their ego, as they set Daniel up to fail, seems pretty mind boggling. This is what happens when jealousy overtakes our thinking and actions. We do not see clearly; therefore, our actions can cost us more than what we thought we would gain.

Father, I ask for You to come and clear my vision. If there is a part of me where I am jealous of another person's accomplishments I ask for this to be made known to me. I submit every part of me to You. I want to be faithful to You in everything I do. I want to represent You well. I want what You call me to do to be excellent. I do not want to get into pride and those there may be some who think my excellence is prideful help me to forgive them and keep my focus on You. I am thankful You have put in my heart to be excellent with all You have given into my hands. I am thankful You have spoken to me to lead me to righteousness. I am not perfect but I am willing to learn, make things right and get back up and try again. My error does not disqualify me from serving You. I will not allow the enemy to keep me down. I will keep my eyes on You and rise again. I will try again. I will overcome fear of past failures by seeing Your strength empower me to embrace what I can do now because You are for me. I will receive Your word of encouragement. I will speak when You say. I will serve faithfully. I will honor You in everything I do in Jesus' name amen.
