When It Gets Personal

Warriors Arise: September 25, 2022

1 Samuel 18:12-16 (NKJV) Now Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with him, but had departed from Saul. 13 Therefore Saul removed him from his presence, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people. 14 And David behaved wisely in all his ways, and the Lord was with him. 15 Therefore, when Saul saw that he behaved very wisely, he was afraid of him. 16 But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them.

What do you do when it gets personal. Saul made it personal. David served God faithfully, so he served Saul. Wherever Saul sent him, David went. When David was given the position over the men of war, he served faithfully. When David was made captain of a thousand, he served faithfully. He went out and came in before the people. David did not slink. He did not hide. He did not speak against Saul when he threw the spears at him. It is so important for us to understand what David is doing here. Things had gotten personal. Saul was jealous and couldn't control it.

It was personal with David. His love for God compelled him to believe God could do anything. He believed in His mercy. I would say David was expressing love with how he served Saul?

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (NKJV) Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love wants to believe people will change. Love is the cup that holds our faith in God to do the miraculous. There was no evidence for David to believe Saul would change, but he still served him. He didn't serve Saul, because he was set on the change that he knew God could do in Saul. David loved God, he loved Saul and served him faithfully. It wasn't want David could get from serving Saul, it was David's way of honoring God. God chose him. God saw him in the back of a pasture doing one of the lowliest jobs known to man. But God, saw David, heard his songs of worship and his faithfulness to do the lowliest jobs with integrity.

So, why does this get personal for David? Because if love is anything, it is personal. Love costs something and it almost cost David his life. Not only to Saul's spear, but because Saul kept sending him out to protect the boarders of Israel that the Philistines continued to try and stake claim to it. David would do what Saul told him to do, because he loved God and he would serve who God placed in authority. God is faithful and good. David's focus was not on Saul, it was on the Lord. This is how David was able to keep a pure heart. He didn't go out and fight for his glory. He went out and fought for the glory of the Lord. Being the youngest of his brothers, he understood the pecking order. The father would get the credit even if he didn't do the job. The older brother would be given the lion's share, because of birthright and for no other reason. His mindset had not changed when he was called into Saul's service. He understood the pecking order. Even when it got personal, David trusted God and served Saul faithfully. David's love for God allowed him to remain steadfast in his faith. His faith was based on a level of trust in God, I pray we will comprehend and walk in.

Father, I ask for You to come. So many times the hardships we face are personal. It is so difficult to keep my mind from wanting to blame others or make excuses for my lack. I don't want to do that any more. I pray for You to come and pour Your love upon me. I ask for You to saturate every cell in my body and restore me. I ask for Your love to dissolve every wicked, pointed thought. I ask for You to rise within me and release Your love to those You have me serving. I pray I would be faithful in everything I am asked to do. I pray I have godly motives. I pray my words would honor You when I speak of them. I pray You are my sure foundation. I will not walk anywhere else, but where You have me. I will stand with You and release Your love in Jesus' name amen.
