1 Chronicles 16:7-19 (NKJV) On that day David first delivered this psalm into the hand of Asaph and his brethren, to thank the Lord: 8 Oh, give thanks to the Lord!
Call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the peoples! 9 Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him; Talk of all His wondrous works! 10 Glory in His holy name; Let the hearts of those rejoice who seek the Lord! 11 Seek the Lord and His strength; Seek His face evermore!
12 Remember His marvelous works which He has done, His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth, 13 O seed of Israel His servant, You children of Jacob, His chosen ones! 14 He is the Lord our God; His judgments are in all the earth.
15 Remember His covenant forever, The word which He commanded, for a thousand generations, 16 The covenant which He made with Abraham, And His oath to Isaac, 17 And confirmed it to Jacob for a statute, To Israel for an everlasting covenant, 18 Saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan As the allotment of your inheritance,” 19 When you were few in number, Indeed very few, and strangers in it.
When the covenant was made, the dream began. God had made the covenant with Abraham hundreds of years earlier, and these people David is speaking to are the fulfillment of that covenant. They were living the reality of the covenant of one man's obedience to God's call.
Genesis 12:1-3 (NKJV) Now the Lord had said to Abram: “Get out of your country,
From your family And from your father's house,
To a land that I will show you.
2 I will make you a great nation;
I will bless you
And make your name great;
And you shall be a blessing.
3 I will bless those who bless you,
And I will curse him who curses you;
And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
Abraham left his father's house to follow God. He took his wife and their servants and all their possessions. They had no intention of returning. Abraham was going to follow God. Instead of remaining and waiting for His father's inheritance, he left to receive God's inheritance. We also find throughout his family was the value of blessing the children. This covenant is very similar to blessings we see come from Abraham, Isaac and Jacob to their sons. When the dream began it started with one, God to Abraham. Abraham had received God as his Father.
Genesis 12:7-9 (NKJV) 7 Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” And there he built an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him. 8 And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord. 9 So Abram journeyed, going on still toward the South.
The land where David and his kinsmen are standing upon, living in and occupying is the fulfillment of the promise made to one man. Abraham was one man. Abraham as a stranger in the land. This was not his father's land. This was not an inheritance from his father. This was God calling him out to make a people of His own. He called one man who listened and believed.
Genesis 15:4-7 (NKJV) And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “This one shall not be your heir, but one who will come from your own body shall be your heir.” 5 Then He brought him outside and said, “Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them.” And He said to him, “So shall your descendants be.” 6 And he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness. 7 Then He said to him, “I am the Lord, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to inherit it.”
As David looked out at the people before him, what did he see? Did he see the fulfillment of that covenant made to their forefather, confirmed with Isaac and established with Jacob? Standing before him are the stars God spoke of. They didn't have city lights, like we do now. When they went to bed at night, they would see the stars lighting up the night. As David reminds them of the covenant, the day coming to a close, the stars beginning to show, I can only imagine his awe of God and one man making covenant with God, going where God tells him to go and doing what God tells him to do. They they were few and strangers in the land of promise, they followed God. They listened to God. They moved with God. They walked with God. They recognized God. The dream began when they acknowledged God by following Him, by doing what He said.
The people standing before David are the continued fulfillment of the covenant God made with Abraham and his willingness to follow Him. The land where Abraham was a stranger, became the home of his descendants; because he followed God. When the dream began, there was no substance, only obedience. For over twenty five years, Abraham followed God without any evidence of the dream becoming reality. With one child, one son conceived by Sarah, the dream was but a single star in the sky. Now, standing before David as they worship God, they are seeing the dream become a reality.
Father, it is so difficult in the beginning to understand and comprehend what You promise me. Twenty five years or more is a long time to see a single star. There are dreams I know You have placed within me. There are dreams where You spoke clearly to me and I continue forward with You, without seeing the one star. Without seeing the beginning of what You have promised. Still, I will honor You. I will praise You. I will follow You. I know You will honor Your promise. I know You will fulfill what You have said. You have stirred these thing within me and yet they may start small. They may start with just a few. I know they will become what You have promised. I praise Your name for the few who are to come as fulfillment of Your promise. I praise You for the fruit of our obedience to honor what You have said and trust You. I worship You for the expansion of Your kingdom through the few that are following You. Your Word will be fulfilled. Your Word will become reality in my life, as it did for Abraham. I trust You and follow You. I will praise You in Jesus' name amen.
