1 Samuel 19:18-20 (NKJV) So David fled and escaped, and went to Samuel at Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and stayed in Naioth. 19 Now it was told Saul, saying, “Take note, David is at Naioth in Ramah!” 20 Then Saul sent messengers to take David.
I shared a few days ago that the messengers were a type of deputy, they had the authority to kill if ordered by the king. We do not hear of Samuel or David received a word from God on what to do. The waiting can be so difficult. Especially, when someone is in pursuit of you and their intentions may not go so well for you.
Trust. How can we trust God when it seems He isn't doing anything? Have you been in a place like this before? The attacks are coming in waves and you run for the high ground, but when you get to the high ground you recognize you are pinned in and surrounded. David didn't run far. As I mentioned in an earlier blog, it would appear he was only about an hour from where his home where his wife remained. However, it isn't how far you run, it is who you run to. The messengers were sent to take David; but he was seeking God with the man who heard from God.
The best place for you to be when the enemy is after you is in the presence of God and others who believe in the call God has on your life. I have wondered why David didn't go to his family for support. Why didn't he seek counsel from his father? When Samuel came to David's father's house years earlier, Jesse, David's father, didn't even have David called in to meet Samuel; until Samuel asked for David. After Samuel left, Jesse sent David back out to the field to tend the sheep. Maybe he thought Samuel had finally fallen off his rocker. He had already anointed a king and it was Saul. The royal family had already been selected and the people accepted Saul.
There are several references in the Bible of Jesus' mother, brothers and sisters calling him out of the meetings and wanting to take Him home. But Jesus would respond, "Who are my mother, my brothers and my sisters? Those who believe God." It is not a matter of rejecting family. It is knowing who will be seeking God with you. Who is believing for the call of God on your life? Who is going to take a stand with you?
When the messengers come to take you, where will you be?
Father, I want You to be the person I run to. If there is someone who will seek You with me, I will align with them. My heart's desire is to hear You, follow You and fulfill what You have placed inside of me. Thank You for those who know what I am called to do. Thank You for those who are praying for me as I have prayed for so many to walk in their calling. I am thrilled to be able to find You. When I run from the enemy, I want to always be found in Your presence. I position myself before You and listen to Your direction. I know You will be with me and give me courage to follow where You lead. I truth You and will run to You everytime in Jesus' name amen.
