Warriors Arise: November 29, 2020
1 Samuel 30:13-15 (NKJV) Then David said to him, “To whom do you belong, and where are you from?” And he said, “I am a young man from Egypt, servant of an Amalekite; and my master left me behind, because three days ago I fell sick. 14 We made an invasion of the southern area of the Cherethites, in the territory which belongs to Judah, and of the southern area of Caleb; and we burned Ziklag with fire.”15 And David said to him, “Can you take me down to this troop?” So he said, “Swear to me by God that you will neither kill me nor deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will take you down to this troop.”
David and all his men are listening as this Egyptian talking. When the Egyptian starts to tell them of the invasion of the southern area, you can bet they know where this is headed. It is headed right where the Egyptian ended, "we burned Ziklag with fire." Seems odd that is all that was recorded but I wonder if it was at that point the men could stand by no longer. It was time to mount up, they had heard enough and their blood was boiling!
David knew better than to let his emotions get the best of him. He asked one more question, "Can you take me down to this troop?" Too many times, if it isn't the enemy working us over in our mind, our emotions can get the best of us. It is nice to see David, keeping his head about him when you know he is just as anxious as the rest of the men to pursue the Amalekites. David could call for his men to saddle up and they could go charging off, but would then be going in the right direction? Would they crest the ridge of the hill and be found out? Would they have enough strength, water and food to go the rest of the way?
They are close but they didn't need to come that far and allow their emotions to get in the way and send them off to who-knows-where. Keeping our emotions in check is a good quality to have. It doesn't mean we never get excited, angry, or bored. It means we use our excitement to celebrate at the right time. It means to be angry and sin not(Eph. 4:26). These men were angry but David was not going to allow something so close slip away because his blood was boiling. It doesn't mean we get bored and allow our attitudes to become apathetic. We are supposed to care and be passionate about what we do. There is a difference between being bored and being still to know God is God.
Our emotions can be pushed from one extreme to another. The extremes are not generally where God has us. God is steady, solid and a source of strength. The extremes can be the enemy on one extreme, tormenting us with his lies or the other extreme can be our emotions. These men were disappointed, had wept until all the tears in them were depleted, pursued the Amalekites and now heard the account of what the Amalekites did to their wives, children and the burning of their city. There is no doubt in my mind, they were emotional; but they did not allow their emotions to get the best of them.
Father, I am thankful for the Holy Spirit. I thank you that when the enemy entices me to buy-in to his lies Your truth sets me free. I thank You that You are my steady when my emotions try to get me to take matters into my own hands. I can wait on You, respond calmly, and make solid decisions. I ask for You to help me. Even when my blood boils, I want to hear You and make the right decision. Even when my heart is breaking I want to know You are the solid rock upon which I stand and I can trust Your lead. When the enemy is lying, You step in and speak the truth. I bless my ears to hear You speak and receive Your truth. When the enemy is causing me to get angry, I will not sin but I will keep a sound mind and do what is necessary to fulfill the plans You have for me. You are my God and I will honor You in Jesus' name, amen.
