1 Chronicles 16:1a (NKJV) So they brought the ark of God, and set it in the midst of the tabernacle that David had erected for it.
That reads a lot better than what Scripture says before they went to go get the ark. I chuckle when I read the following.
1 Chronicles 15:1 (NKJV) David built houses for himself in the City of David; and he prepared a place for the ark of God, and pitched a tent for it.
Seriously, when I read David built a house for himself and pitched a tent for the ark of the Lord, I actually laughed. When I read he "pitched a tent for it", I envision David walking out of his house and tell a group of people, "Right here, pitch the tent here. You should have it up by Noon and we can be on our way an hour after that."
It is the wording that makes me chuckle, pitched a tent. It also tells how David was ready, really ready, to go get the ark of the Lord. He wanted God's dwelling place, His presence, to be near him, but also to bring the nation back to God.
Most likely, David didn't have a plan for the brick and mortar tabernacle. At this point, he might not have wanted to build. If he had thought about building a brick and mortar tabernacle for God, he might have been reluctant for at least one reason. He had done His research about how the ark of the Lord was to be carried. He knew about the tabernacle tent made in the wilderness. He might not have wanted to change things, at least not yet. God had given Moses specific instructions on building the Tabernacle of the Lord in the desert, if that is where He wanted to reside then that is where David would take Him. As far as we know through Scripture, God had not given any other instructions. David would bring Him home.
Have you brought God home? In your mind, is God somewhere out there? Do you think of Him as having so much to do? Do you think He is in heaven paying no attention to what is going on here?
From what I have studied in Scripture, Holy Spirit resides in each Christian. However, we can trick our mind and think we have separated ourselves from God. When this happens, we have to go get God. It may have happened when hard times came upon us or we lost a battle to the enemy. Maybe you have felt God's presence leave you. This is another trick of our mind. He is Emmanuel. He is with us always. He says He will never leave us nor forsake us; but we can gag Him, we can quench Holy Spirit. Maybe you see others who are being blessed by God, but the blessing is not flowing into your life. Again, you may be tricked into thinking, God is with them but not with you. The comparison game is NEVER beneficial unless used to stir up each other by way of testimony of what God can do. In this we understand, what He has done for another, He will do for us.
We each need to ask ourselves, "Did God leave me or did I leave God?" Israel, had left God years, if not decades before the ark of the Lord was taken in battle. Saul, Israel's king, had rejected Samuel, the prophet, and the Word of the Lord he spoke. Eli, the High Priest had not raised his sons to honor God. God allowed the ark to be taken.
When He was returned, they didn't come get Him and bring Him home. They left Him just inside the border of Israel at Abinadab's house. It was time for God to be brought home, not only physically but literally. It was time for His people to embrace their God. He had been there, but they didn't have anything to with Him. Only Abinadab's house embraced God and made a home for Him.
God doesn't want only one person, one family to embrace Him. He wants all of His people to bring Him into their lives and into their home. Do you need to go get God and bring Him home? What would that look like? Obviously, you are not going to get the ark of the Lord. So, what would we do today? What would we do to go get God and bring Him home?
Father, God, I position myself before You. I desire to have You in my life. Forgive me, because I have sinned by comparing myself to others, to what I perceive to be Your hand of blessing upon their life. I know You love me and desire to me to experience breakthrough from the quicksand of life that is paralyzing me. I know You desire for me to walk in freedom from he prison of lies I have believed. I seek You today, because I want to worship You and You alone. I want You to be the center of my life. Forgive me, because I have quenched Holy Spirit. I did not listen. I did not embrace all that You had for me. I come to You and desire to bring You home in Jesus' name amen.
