1 Samuel 19:18 (NKJV) So David fled and escaped, and went to Samuel at Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him.
Where was David going to go?
Who was friend and who was foe?
Did he know of the messengers?
Did he know the messengers?
Did he share information, when they that would help find him?
Who would be able to make sense of this?
Who would be able to protect him?
Who would be able to tell him what he should do next?
David had been anointed to be king of Israel by Samuel. Samuel doesn't tell him how he will become king, nor when. Most likely, since Saul didn't listen to or honor what Samuel shared with him from God, others didn't either. In their mind, Samuel had been replaced by Saul since the people no longer wanted a judge in the land. They had asked for a king and God gave them one.
David returned to the one who prophesied over him. He found Samuel. He had to know:
What did I do wrong?
What am I supposed to do now?
Am I really the next king of Israel?
So many questions. If there was anyone he could trust, it would be Samuel. Do you have someone you trust, someone who will petition the Lord God on your behalf? Do you have someone who will tell you the truth? Samuel had a reputation for telling those in authority hard and difficult things from God. As a child, God spoke to him and he had to tell Eli, God's judgement upon his house. Then as a judge in the land, he had to tell the people the dangers of being like the other kingdoms, rejecting God and having a king. He didn't mince words with Saul.
1 Samuel 13:11-15 (NKJV) And Samuel said, “What have you done?” Saul said, “When I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that you did not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered together at Michmash, 12 then I said, ‘The Philistines will now come down on me at Gilgal, and I have not made supplication to the Lord.’ Therefore I felt compelled, and offered a burnt offering.” 13 And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of the Lord your God, which He commanded you. For now the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. 14 But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.” 15 Then Samuel arose and went up from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin.
Samuel did not stick around after this exchange of words and rebuke. Saul was not following God. He did not want to be guided by God. But David, sought out Samuel. He wanted to know what God said. He wanted to know what he had done wrong. He wanted to know what to do now.
Where do you go when the enemy is after you? When you feel like you are about to be crushed and your destiny killed before you eyes, where do you go?
Father, this is such a good reminder. I am to come to You. I am to seek You for Your direction. I am to place myself before you and know what You want me to do next. I can get so overwhelmed with what is going on that I feel confusion come over me. I do not want to be wandering or aimless in what is next. I want to run to You when the enemy is trying to crush my spirit and destroy my destiny. I pray I quickly turn to You. I want to run to You. I want to present myself and listen. I pray I would make it habit of mine to position myself before You when things are going terrible, when the winds and waves seem to be taking me down. I want to make sure I listen to Your word. You will direct my path. You will show me what I am to do. You will give me the answer, the way out and I will walk in it. You are always with me. I will trust You. I will tell my mind to be still and listen intently for what you are saying. Thank You for receiving me. Thank You for listening. Thank You for getting me out of a dangerous situation. Thank You for meeting me so I can learn what is the next part of Your plan. I will listen and follow You in Jesus' name amen.
