Matthew 2:9-11 (NKJV) ...behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. 11 And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him.
Imagine this scenario. It doesn't say Jesus brought them in. Keep in mind, he was two or nearly two. I think there was a gap from verse 10 to verse 11. I think they saw Mary and Jesus outside. Maybe they were at the market or she was doing laundry or she was hanging up the laundry outside the house. The star leads them to Jesus, and stands over Him. They are astonished, for a number of reasons, and watch from a distance. Maybe they even watched from a looking glass. The reason I think they were a little distance away is because people would have heard them rejoicing with exceedingly great joy. They would have been hooping and hollering, carrying on with arms raise, slapping each other on the back or something. But we do not know that Mary of Jesus heard them. If they were close, you would think Mary and Jesus would have turned to see who was causing all the ruckus. But Scripture doesn't tell us they even knew the wisemen were there. The wisemen maybe learned their lesson from their experience in Jerusalem, where they had caused such a disturbance and troubling the entire city, with their questions about and hunt for the new born king of the Jews. This time the wisemen didn't take their eyes off of the star. Instead of getting ahead of the star and searching for themselves, they watched the star. They followed the star. They saw the star over where the young Child was.
Seems unusual for them to have entered the house of a woman they do not know. If they knew the prophecy that she would be a virgin, they maybe didn't know she was now married to Joseph. With the difference in the way verse 10 is written and verse 11, it is as if Mary and Jesus don't even know the wisemen were there. If we think the star went through a window and they are watching from there, still Mary and Jesus would have heard the them rejoicing. It was exceedingly great rejoicing. They would have been loud.
Then with reverence, as to still observe and revere the Child, Jesus, the star stood over Him and they entered the house.
Father, I want to follow You. As You lead, I will follow. I will rejoice and celebrate all You are doing and where You are leading me. I will make the journey. I will not turn back. When I see the fulfillment of Your promise, the reality of what You have said, I will rejoice with exceeding joy. I will give a shout of praise and worship You with all that I am. You are so much fun. I thoroughly enjoy the treasure hunt in Your Word and in life. When I see where You are, I will go to You. I will honor where You have brought me. I will serve with the gifts I have to advance Your kingdom. I will not sit back and watch others do what You have brought me so far to do. I will rejoice in the fruition of the treasure hunt. I will rejoice in finding exactly where you would have me. I will rejoice in the opportunity to give the gifts I have to the King, to the people, to advance Your kingdom in Jesus' name amen.
