1 Samuel 18:17-18 (NKJV) Then Saul said to David, “Here is my older daughter Merab; I will give her to you as a wife. Only be valiant for me, and fight the Lord's battles.” For Saul thought, “Let my hand not be against him, but let the hand of the Philistines be against him.”
18 So David said to Saul, “Who am I, and what is my life or my father's family in Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king?”
David has a perspective of honor for Saul as king, that seems odd. Saul was the first king of Israel and he wasn't a very good one. It wasn't that he led some battle; therefore, earning him the right to be king. Before Saul was king, Israel had Judges. They were the ones God moved in and through to accomplish His tasks. They were the ones who spoke the Word of the Lord and rendered judgement against Israel's persecutors. But the people of Israel rejected God's way of being governed. They wanted a king like all the other nations around them. This is another oddity. They were not chosen by God in order to be like, live like or govern like those who did not know God. They were pulled out of the world's way of living, doing, and governing. They were placed in circumstances where God would show His love, redemption and power to establish His protection, favor, and abundance. How many times have you and I been redeemed from the world or worldly ways only to wish we could be like them? How is it that we miss the entire concept of being set apart for great exploits and to be a beacon to the world of God's amazing love through provision, healing and abundance?
David responding to Saul, “Who am I, and what is my life or my father's family in Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king?” is a different way of thinking. We think of royalty and how they don't have to do the grunt work but are served, pampered, and provided for by the people. We think they have everyone doing their bidding. This may be why David did not question why he was being sent out to fight the Philsitines. His idea may have been, "We are to protect the king. We fight so he doesn't have to." This may be why David says, "What is my life?" Because he was of such lowly family lines and connections, he didnt' feel worthy. Maybe this is truly how David felt. He hadn't dared to dream that what Samuel did would come true. Maybe it scared him, because marriage into the family might be the way Samuel's prophetic word would come to pass.
Have you ever received a prophetic word? It seems too impossible. We are the lowliest of the lowly, we do not have the family connections, we do not have anyone to speak on our behalf, we do not work a prominent job and we do not have…. you fill in the blank. If you have received a prophetic word, it is very much like that. This can't possibly be for me. This person missed it. They must be talking about so and so. I am not equipped. I don't know the first thing about what I am supposed to do. Getting from here to there is not an A to B connection. It is more like going through the alphabet three times from A to ZZZ. Remember when David walked onto the battlefield to face Goliath, Saul asks Abner, "Who's his father?" Abner did not know. They were no esteemed warriors from David's family. David's father's family was not known in Israel. It would spread by David's response that he feels someone with prominence should be marrying Saul's daughter. Being related to the king, as the son-in-law seemed to be too much for David to accept.
There are times when people want us to take a position, yet everything within us tells us something is right and that this is not God's way. David came up with all kinds of reasons or excuses why he should not be Saul's son-in-law. Maybe he didn't know why, but he knew it wasn't a marriage he wanted nor a position he wanted. Maybe he knew, this wasn't the way God brought the prophetic word into reality. We want to be in tune with God so we know when we are being set up. Saul was trying to set David up to be killed. He didn't really want to give his daughter to David. He wanted David to die in battle against the Philistines. David was not going to rise to the prophetic word by the hand of man and through connections. God would orchestrate things so the calling on David's life would come to fruition.
Father, I know I am Yours. I know You have plans for my life and my desire is to be in tune with You. You are for me and the prophetic words You have spoken over my life will come fruition. I will trust You for the timing. I will step into the fullness of what You have for me. I will not take my position before You open the door. I will follow You. I may be a nobody to everyone else but I am Your somebody. I will walk with You, learn You voice and step into the reality You have for me in Jesus' name amen.
