Who are You Calling Short

Warriors Arise: January 18, 2022

Luke 19:1-10 (NKJV) Then Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. 2 Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. 3 And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way. 5 And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said to him, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” 6 So he made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully. 7 But when they saw it, they all complained, saying, “He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner.” 8 Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.” 9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; 10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

I am average height. Zacchaeus is described as being of short stature. My husband would say he is vertically challenged, at 5 feet tall. A few of our girls are already feeling the bite of being short. Our youngest daughter came home in tears from gymnastics, because the other girls in her class told her she was a liar. They said there is no way she could be 10 years old, because she is too short. Selah and Lydia have experienced similar situations. For some reason, in the process of people trying to make children feel older people say, "Look how big you are" as if being bigger/taller has anything to do with being older, wiser, accomplished, or full of good character. I am 50 years old, I am not any taller now than when I was 14. So, what is my point?

Zacchaeus did not allow his short stature to prevent him from seeing Jesus. We can come up with the most ridiculous excuses as to why we didn't see Jesus, why we didn't got to church, or why we don't have regular consistent God time etc. We also need to know when we stand before God, we will have a clear picture of our excuses and reasoning. Zacchaeus did not allow his short stature to prevent him from seeing Jesus. We can come up with a plethora of excuses: it is raining outside, it is too cold, it is a bother, I'm tired, I have other things to do, I am not a spiritual as others, I do not know my Bible as well as others, I am too short, I am too tall, I am too big, I am too small, I don't sit well, I don't like to stand...etc. But they do not position us to see Jesus. Our excuses become the prison bars we look through every day. We can see what is possible and where we want to be, without realizing the prison bars are paper thin. They wouldn't remain standing if we pushed them out of the way.

Zacchaeus did not allow something he couldn't change, his height, to prevent him from seeing Jesus.

Father, reveal to me the excuses I have used. These excuses have kept me in a prison. I see between them, I see the possible, even where I want to go because that is where you are. I do not want them to keep me from seeing You. I pray for my passion to burn away the bars of excuses. I pray for boldness to put the excuse aside and run to where I will be positioned to see You in Jesus' name amen.
