Matthew 4:5-7 (NKJV) Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written:
‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and,
‘In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”
7 Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’
Makes we wonder if Jesus was speaking of Himself or His Father. Jesus is one part of the Trinity; there is God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. I wonder if Jesus was trying to give the devil a hint. I have always read this before as the devil being the one calling the shots. But this time through, going a little slower other things are popping out.
The devil was never calling the shots. The Holy Spirit took Jesus out to the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. They were waiting on the devil to get there. Then they could move on with the next of what Jesus needed to do to fulfill finish the job. Was there a double or even triple meaning to the Jesus' response.
Jesus will not call upon the angles to prove who He is, "They would come, but I don't need to prove anything to you. I will not reveal who I am, since it is evident you don't know."
To show the power of Scripture.
To give a hint, He is the one the devil should not be tempting. He is God, the Son. He is the Lord. He is the one the devil will bow down to when the trumpet sounds. He will be with everyone else and bow their knee to Jesus.
So, who was calling the shots? The devil seems to think he is calling the shots. He has no idea who he was questioning. He didn't know who he was trying to tempt. Jesus was calling him out, "… you shall not tempt the Lord your God.'" It is pretty clear Jesus is letting the devil know exactly who He is.
Father, even Jesus, had to deal with the pestering of the evil. I pray I would have the tenacity to wtihstand the posturing of the devil. I pray I would have the Scripture needed to shut down each thing the devil says. I pray I would not be worn down the devil. I pray I would stand strong upon the Word. I would be bold and clear in speaking forth Your Word. I pray I would withstand the temptations and not grow weary. Thank You for the strength to stand up against the enemy. I will hold fast to Your Word. I will be strengthened by Your Word. I will stomp all over temptation and walk according to Your plan for my life in Jesus' name amen.
