Isaiah 61:10 (NKJV)
I will greatly rejoice in the Lord,
My soul shall be joyful in my God...
Why shouldn't we be joyful? Can you declare as Isaiah did? "I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, My soul shall be joyful in my God". When we say, "I will", we have made a decision. We make the choice to do something. Here, Isaiah, makes the choice to rejoice in the Lord. Then he goes on to restate it. Double emphasis on being joyful in the Lord. When he declares his soul shall be joyful in my God, there is a shift. He is talking about all of himself. His soul is his mind, will and emotions. There are times when we have to make the decisions to rejoice in the Lord.
When we say, "In the Lord" it seems like a declaration of someone we know, revere and honor. It is a statement of loyalty. However, when Isaiah says, "My soul shall be joyful in my God," he is making it personal. He is declaring to his mind to be joyful. He is declaring his will to be joyful. He is declaring his emotions to be joyful. Our mind can be wayward if we do not guide what we think and dwell upon. Unguided thoughts can lead to confusion. When we declare our will to be dedicated then we are not being being passive or apathetic. Engaging our will to being joyful to God is being active in the relationship. We are not going to sit around expecting God to do everything for us, when God wants to do things with us. Then we have to address our emotions. We were created to be emotional beings. However, our emotions are not to make decisions for us. My feelings are not to lead what I do. My feelings are to enhance what I do. My mind has the ability to grow in wisdom and understanding of God and His ways. My will has to do with my determination. My emotions have the ability to engage my passion. We need all of these to be committed to the Lord.
Isaiah gets personal with himself when he commits his soul to being joyful in God. Notice he doesn't just say God but he says "My God". This is really important. When we refer to God as "My God", we are expressing ownership. We do not own God, but we are fully engaged in our relationship with God when we speak of Him as my God. It is a sense of intimacy, a knowing and loyalty. Makes me have to ask myself, "If I am not joyful, is it because I am not committed to my relationship with God? Am I loyal to who He has called me to be, what He has called me to do, and who He has called me to serve? Is He a part of my life in such a way that there is not separation, because I am engaged in our relationship with my mind, will and emotions?"
God is active in my life everyday. Why shouldn't I rejoice in the Lord? God is a part of my life like no other and His love abounds in my life; therefore, my soul shall be joyful in my God.
Father, You are amazing in all of Your ways. I stand in awe of You. Everyday, You are active in my life. Everyday I call out to You and You hear me. Everyday You speak to me. You guide and encourage me. Everyday You give me knowledge of things I hadn't thought of before. Everyday You give me wisdom. Every day Your love pours out upon me. I will rejoice in the Lord. My soul will be joyful in my God in Jesus' name amen.
