Why Was He Afraid?

Warriors Arise: September 15, 2022

1 Samuel 18:10-12 (NKJV) And it happened on the next day that the distressing spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied inside the house. So David played music with his hand, as at other times; but there was a spear in Saul's hand. 11 And Saul cast the spear, for he said, “I will pin David to the wall!” But David escaped his presence twice. 12 Now Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with him, but had departed from Saul.

Why did Saul become afraid of David? Honestly, I would have thought he would have been afraid of him the first time David was able to sooth the distressing spirit that had come upon him. David was releasing something more powerful than the distressing spirit that was irritating Saul. Since David can control the distressing spirit then could he control me? I would have thought that would have dawned on Saul.

When David enters Saul's tent to discuss the matter of killing Goliath, the Philistine, it didn't seem to dawn on him that this is the same youth who they call when the distressing spirit comes upon him. When David takes down Goliath in the epic battle with one stone and the sword of his foe, Saul asked Abner who does this youth belonged to. At that point, wouldn't you think Saul would become afraid of David. David could sooth the distressing spirit, seeming to control it, and now he is killing giants.

Maybe Saul thought it was all a fluke. At least until David was accepted by all the people of the land, the men of war, and the servants. Saul still is not identifying the magnitude of his sin and who God had invited him to be, until the women of the land are singing greatness over David. This didn't happen all at once. But Saul didn't see it because he had rejected the Lord. The consequences aren't always reveal immediately. When we reset God's direction, walk out from under God's protection and away from the path of the destiny He has for us, there is a moment of awareness. "Ah, this is what my discussion really cost me." However at that point I believe we all have a decision. We serve a gracious and loving God. His mercies are new every morning. Not that He wants us to continue living unto ourselves, but He is all about redemption. He will receive us back and can restore what was lost. There are times we will not get the restoration of what was lost in the past, but we can start new, right where we are, at the place of the cross and be placed upon the path leading to our destiny. To do this, we have to make things right with God. We have to acknowledge our sin and seek to be forgiven. Then He will re-establish us in our destiny.

Why didn't Saul call for Samuel and repent to God? We read later in David's life, he was not perfect as a king. However, when he was confronted by his sin and realized his wrong, he turned to God and pleaded for mercy for his people and for the decisions he made in sin. Saul does not do this. Maybe David learned what not to do, during his time serving Saul. Saul did not repent. He did not seek to make things right with God. He did not listen to God. He did not listen to God's prophet.

There is great reason to be afraid when you purposefully turn your back on God. Amazingly, God doesn't get rid of Saul. He lets him live and rule the people. He lets him make a fool of himself as he chases after David, not one time but a second time. David was not the problem. Even if Saul had killed David, there would have been another chosen by God to take Saul's place on the throne. The problem and the reason for Saul's fear is because he had set himself in opposition to God. The very presence and thought of David reminded him of his own sin, his unwillingness to follow God. David was not the problem. Being reminded of what Saul could have had, was the problem. It didn't seem to occur to him that he could have it back if he would just repent and embrace a relationship with God.

Father, I ask for You to come and reveal the truth. I do not like to be reminded of my sin, but if that is what it takes to get me to return to You, then remind me. Place those people in front of me that will provoke me to righteousness. I do not want to remain in my sin. I do not want to pretend I am so worthy of all that I have when my worthiness has nothing to do with it. You have caused me to prosper. You have given me the position I have. You have spoken to me. You have sent people to speak to me. I will listen. I will turn from my sin. My fear is fed by my unwillingness to make a change in my life. My fear is because I have rejected Your leading. My fear is because I see in others living in prosperity, purpose, and praise, because they are living their life with You, following You, and honoring You. Today, I return to You. Today, I will walk worthy of what You have given into my hands. I will no longer reject Your counsel. I will position myself to receive Your counsel and follow it in Jesus' name amen.
