1 Chronicles 16:7-28 (NKJV) On that day David first delivered this psalm into the hand of Asaph and his brethren, to thank the Lord:
8 Oh, give thanks to the Lord!
Call upon His name;
Make known His deeds among the peoples!
9 Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him;
Talk of all His wondrous works!
10 Glory in His holy name;
Let the hearts of those rejoice who seek the Lord!
11 Seek the Lord and His strength;
Seek His face evermore!
12 Remember His marvelous works which He has done,
His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth,
13 O seed of Israel His servant,
You children of Jacob, His chosen ones!
14 He is the Lord our God;
His judgments are in all the earth.
15 Remember His covenant forever,
The word which He commanded, for a thousand generations,
16 The covenant which He made with Abraham,
And His oath to Isaac,
17 And confirmed it to Jacob for a statute,
To Israel for an everlasting covenant,
18 Saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan
As the allotment of your inheritance,”
19 When you were few in number,
Indeed very few, and strangers in it.
20 When they went from one nation to another,
And from one kingdom to another people,
21 He permitted no man to do them wrong;
Yes, He rebuked kings for their sakes,
22 Saying, “Do not touch My anointed ones,
And do My prophets no harm.”
23 Sing to the Lord, all the earth;
Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day.
24 Declare His glory among the nations,
His wonders among all peoples.
25 For the Lord is great and greatly to be praised;
He is also to be feared above all gods.
26 For all the gods of the peoples are idols,
But the Lord made the heavens.
27 Honor and majesty are before Him;
Strength and gladness are in His place.
28 Give to the Lord, O families of the peoples,
Give to the Lord glory and strength.
I am not sure how we give the Lord glory. By definition glory is splendor. Then going further in the definition glory is also honor. Give the Lord honor. What could they have done to give the Lord glorious honor? Let's think about this a moment. Earlier that day they met at Obed Edom's home and were part of the processional to Jerusalem to bring God, the ark of the covenant, upon which His presence rested. They sang, played instruments, and danced on the road to Jerusalem. They celebrated as the ark of the convent was placed in the tent. They watched as the offerings were made to the Lord. They were blessed by David and received food. Now he is exhorting them to continue to give the Lord glory and strength. What is he saying?
This may be two-fold. They are to continue to give the Lord glory and strength now and they are to continue to give the Lord glory and strength as they go home. David is trying to compel them to remember this day, remember the Lord. He is with each one; no matter where they are, they can give the Lord glory and strength. He knows if they stop giving the Lord glory, they will stop turning to God and this will lead to apathy which leads to being enticed by whatever someone else is passionate about, what ever idol they present. But the Lord, He has always been and He will always be. The question to the people and to you and I, "Will we always be giving the Lord glory? Will we always be giving the Lord strength in our lives?" Then I have to back up to the beginning of the verse, "Will I and my family be giving the Lord glory? Will we find our strength in Him? Will I and my family, give strength to the Lord? Will He be empowered by the honor I give Him? Will He be secure that I will remain faithful to Him?
When I looked up "strength." It means to be secure, bold, loud, strong, power and mighty. Will my actions and words give the Lord boldness to respond? Will my actions and worship give the Lord might and power? Will my actions and words give the Lord a place in my life to be loud? When the Lord showed up to meet His people at the the mountain to celebrate their freedom from the Egyptians and receive honor, majesty, strength, gladness and glory, they trembled in fear. God was too loud for them. The party was too grand. The mountain lit up with blue lights and a fog hung over the mountain. When you go to a really good concert you see a lot of flashing blue and white lights. You will also see fog being pumped out onto the stage and into the crowd. Entertainers were not the first to come up with this. God started it back on the mountain when His people arrived. But they would not draw near to Him. They were afraid. They thought He had brought them out there to kill them. They couldn't celebrate Him. The missed giving Him honor, majesty, strength, gladness, and glory. The wouldn't honor Him for freeing them from the hell they lived through back in Egypt. They were the ones who put the distance in their relationship. They had cried out to God for deliverance for four hundred years and when He delivered them, they wanted nothing to do with Him. The pain God must have felt. What a people? They were totally ungrateful for what He had done to deliver them and provide for them on their journey to meet Him. The were totally judgmental, accusing Him of bringing them out to the desert to die. David didn't want the people standing before him right now to do the same thing. God was in their midst. He was in their presence. He demonstrated His love for His people. He returned when it didn't seem like anyone wanted Him around, but Obed Edom and David.
David is teaching the people how to be in relationship with God. He is exhorting them to embrace God and make a place for Him in their lives everyday. Will you? Will you let God be loud in your life? Will you let God show His power in your life? Will you let God secure your today so you walk in the fullness of what He has for your future? Will you let God be bold through you? Will you embrace the strength of the Lord and do the deeds that bring Him honor, glory, majesty, power and strength?
Father, I yield. I want to let You be who You are. Be bold in my life. Demonstrate Your love through me. Come and be majestic. I will magnify Your name. You are worthy of my praise. I will lift Your name on high and worship You. I find my security in You and Your strength is displayed through me. You power goes forth and I see You at work doing the miraculous to love Your people. You are strength. You are bold. You are loud. You are secure. You are power. I will magnify my Lord in Jesus' name amen.
