1 Samuel 17:43 (NKJV) So the Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
How many of you remember the elementary comeback to someone who said something mean to you? "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." I wonder if this came from someone reading about David, Saul's army and Goliath?
1 Samuel 17:8-11 (NKJV) Then he stood and cried out to the armies of Israel, and said to them, “Why have you come out to line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and you the servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me. 9 If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and serve us.” 10 And the Philistine said, “I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.” 11 When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.
The Philistine had paralyzed Saul's army with many words. None of them would take the challenge, defend their king, country and God. None of them stepped forward. No one would take the challenge, even the king hid in his tent. But David, who is not old enough to be in Saul's army, hears these words and they do not paralyze him, they compel him to action. He finds out as much information as they know: the reward to be given to the victor and the king's permission. Then David doesn't wait for the Philistine to speak again before he walks onto the battlefield.
David had seen what the words of this Philistine had done to Saul's army, to his three older brothers. He was a pillar that needed to be brought down. He would not allow the words to paralyze him, but to ignite something inside of him.
This demonstrates that you and I have a choice every time words are spoken. You and I have a choice. They can paralyze us causing us to shrink back from who we are called to be and we can hide in our tents from what we are called to do. This part of Biblical history reveals how important it is to respond quickly to the Lord, know and assess the battle to come and prepare to fight based on our training, remembering what has defeated the enemy before. It is detrimental to the plans God has for us, to continue to allow our enemy to speak word of defeat. Every time we do not respond according to God's plans we will be more conquered within and it will be evident to everyone. When a spirit has been crushed then the fight to accomplish great things, becomes a lost vision that seems like nothing but a fairytale.
Words can be defeating. Words do hurt, but we can embrace the hurt. We pull them in, identify if there is any truth in them. Then we take them before God and receive His words. The main problem you and I face is that we haven't developed the habit of taking what has been said about us to the Lord. We allow those words to roll around in our minds until they poison our hearts and if we go to God for the truth it isn't until the words have stolen our confidence in who we are meant to be and in who God is.
We cannot allow the enemy to infiltrate our thoughts. When we hear the words we have to go to God immediately and get the record set straight. We tend to believe the enemy because there is a hint of truth in what he is saying. But then there is the lie that overshadows the truth. When we take it to God, He reveals the truth and pulls out the lie. There may be a part of us that needs to be submitted to God. The enemy exposes it and when we turn to God, He removes it.
Romans 12:1-2 (NKJV) I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
This is how you can take what the enemy is saying and use it against him. The enemy meant to say the truth about you and wrap it in a lie so you would be paralyzed by how you don't measure up or have failed again. But when we take this to God, He removes the truth of our failure because He removes the weakness in us, if we allow Him. How many times have we argued with God saying, "This is who I am, I can't be anyone different. This is what I do, I can't help myself."? He comes and says, "Because of my Son, You are different. Because of Christ in you, you have the strength to do differently."
Father, I repent to You. I have heard what the enemy says about me. I have agreed with him and kept those things to myself. I have not brought them to You. There was too much truth in his words. I was wrong. I tried to change on my own without You, without allow Christ in me to remove my sin. I will turn to You. When I hear the enemy taunting me, I will turn to You and allow You to remove my sin. When I hear the enemy speak against You, I will turn to You. You will give me the strength to take down the enemy. I will not allow the sin that was in my life to continue. I will not allow the enemy to speak against You. When I do not confront the enemy's lies about You my faith begins to be chipped away. I want all the faith You have given me and the faith that has grown through the countless times You have brought me through fire. You are my God and the words of the enemy will be brought before You. I will not allow the enemy's words to take my faith nor paralyze me to inaction. You are my strength and I trust You in Jesus' name amen.
