Would You Recognize Him?

Warriors Arise: June 5th, 2020

"Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened. Yes, and certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us. When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive. And certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see."

Luke 24:21b-24a

So these disciples walking to Emmaus knew what the women had reported from earlier in the day. They knew "today" is the third day. They were astonished with what the women had reported. They heard of the messenger angels who had met the women. They heard the message, "Jesus is alive!" They knew Peter and John had gone to the tomb and found it just as the women had said.

Jesus might have been thinking as they are sharing each step: "Yes it is the third day. Yes the angels sent a message to the disciples. Yes, I Am alive. Yes, Peter and John came to the tomb. Yes, what the women reported is true."

I get so excited when I have a huge surprise for someone. I love to see their faces, their eyes, the natural excitement when they figure it out or see that what I gave them or did for them, especially when it was beyond what they expected. I imagine Jesus about to come out of His skin as they are telling Him of today's events. I think He might have been waiting to see if they would ask Him, "What do you think? Do you think Jesus is alive?" Maybe He was hoping they would recognize His voice. His concern. His care. Maybe recognize the way He walked. Sometimes I can identify people from way off because of their posture or the way they walk. I don't even have to see all of them, but something about them triggers a memory of something I have seen before... and I know it is them.

In our relationship with God, we have the ability to recognize Him because we have spent time learning Who He is and how He operates through reading His Word, learning how He speaks to us, knowing when He is present, and the opportunities He places before us. God isn't just for Sunday but for every day. He wants to be relevant in our lives. He wants us to know He has plans for us and they are good plans. He wants to know He will lead us through the darkness and bring us into the light. We do not have to live in fear. "God does not give us a spirit of fear, but of love, power and a sound mind." 2 Timothy 1:7

When Jesus was on earth, he used to walk through the crowds and listen for those who called for Him. He used to watch for those who would listen as He taught, and He knew when power went out of Him and someone was healed. Jesus walked through streets even when people were sent to trap Him, imprison Him, and kill Him.

In our world today, chaos all around, we need Jesus to walk the streets again. I am thankful He sent His Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit can be at every peace protest, riot, and looting. The Holy Spirit can be in every business that needs protecting. The Holy Spirit can be in every hospital room needing healing from the coronavirus. The Holy Spirit can shut down lies and reveal truth. God is grieved over His people, like a parent who wants their kids to get along, a parent who is tired of the kids fighting all day long, every day. God wants each one of us to turn to Him and pray for the lost to turn from sin and walk with Jesus, the deceived to know the truth, the sick to be healed, the broken to be restored, and the hurt to be made whole. God wants the best for each one of us. However, it starts with knowing God, receiving Jesus, then living with the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.

Father, I ask for you to come and make Yourself known. I know Your heart grieves for the deaths of police officers, business owners, and the passers-by. Just like the coronavirus snatching lives before their time, these protests have caused the deaths of too many innocent people. I ask for You to come and demonstrate Your love. Reach out to the familie and loved ones who have died needlessly in the last 9 days. They came through the scare of the coronavirus, to be killed on the streets. I ask for you to wrap Your arms around the family members of each police officer's family members and friends. I ask for You to extend Your love to the business owners who have died from the riots and those who have lost so much more than they every did from the pandemic. I ask for You minister Your love to those who were by-standers and killed, beaten, or left bleeding when the protesters came by. Each person needs to know You. You are the only one who can set things on the right track. I ask for You to walk through the protesting and make yourself known. I ask for you to not keep silent but speak, so the people hear You. I pray for their hearts to be open and their minds to be clear when You speak. I pray each one would be ready to follow You. I ask for You to make a way out of the protests, riots and looting. I ask for You to come and make Yourself known, bring peace, calm the emotions, bring truth to the lies that have been spoken, and bring justice to those who have been wronged in Jesus' name amen.
