1 Samuel 16:22 (NKJV) Then Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Please let David stand before me, for he has found favor in my sight.”
I can't imagine, as a parent, wondering how Jesse was handling the situation of letting his son go to King Saul. The torment of not knowing what King Saul wanted with his son. There is no record saying the men who came to get David told Jesse, the family or David why he was being summoned by the king. I am sure the first question would have been, "Why does the king want my son?" We do not know if there was any dialog. So did he submit with blind obedience? How many times, from the point the king's servants arrived and asked for David, did Jesse have to tell himself to breathe? Our thoughts can be so consumed with fear that we forget to breathe. We find ourselves holding our breath.
It could seem that Jesse didn't care for David at all, but we don't know that. He was the youngest and Jesse was surprised by Samuel's coming. He didn't fully understand and was on his guard about what the prophet was doing at his house. I find it odd that Jesse asked if the prophet came in peace. What was he expecting?
When the king's servants come we do not read Jesse saying anything to them. I wonder if fear was in his eyes. Did they find out about what Samuel had done? When they asked for David, maybe he was baffled. Hopefully he didn't say it out loud but I could imagine it rolling through his mind, "First the prophet and now the king, who will be next?"
From the point David left his view, headed for the king, how steady was his breathing? But then he gets word:
1 Samuel 16:22 (NKJV) Then Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Please let David stand before me, for he has found favor in my sight.”
We can all breathe now, King Saul did not kill David. In this waiting time, what do you think Jesse did? I wonder if he went out among the sheep and prayed for his son. I wonder if he had his other sons prepare for war. I wonder if he was packing up and headed out of Israel, planning to save their lives if King Saul had called David in to kill him because Samuel had anointed him as the next king. If he killed David, then Jesse might be concerned for the rest of them. Think about what you would do in Jesse's situation. Even if King Saul didn't know about Samuel anointing David, he was now being tormented by demons. People being tormented by demons doing crazy, violent things.
There is nothing more freeing than knowing your child who was in danger or thrown to the lions seems to have made in out alive. We can breathe and use every breath to praise God for His protection.
Father, there are so many times You have intervened and saved my life. I can't even count the number of times I felt like I was tossed into the lions' den or in a situation where I could end up being seriously harmed, but You. You intervened. You were my strength, You were the solid ground upon which I stood. I see You acting on behalf of my children. You have protected them when I couldn't. You have walked with them and led them out. I praise You for each time and those I don't even know about. I press into Your goodness and all You have done to protect me and my family. I praise You for how You have put a shield around me and my family. I praise You for creating a bubble of protection in the midst of dark and dangerous times. I will praise You all of my days for what I know You have done and for all You have done that I do not know. You are my God and Your love for me and my family is amazing. I bless Your mighty Name in Jesus' name amen.
