Matthew 5:5 Blessed are the meek,
For they shall inherit the earth.
How do the meek inherit the earth? Why do they inherit the earth?
Let's look at the Greek translation of "earth" specifically in this verse. Earth in this verse, Strongs's says:
contracted from a primary word; soil; by extension a region, or the solid part or the whole of the terrene globe (including the occupants in each application): — country, earth(-ly), ground, land, world.
God sent Jesus to establish His kingdom here on earth. Then Jesus trained His disciples to pursue God with all their heart, with all their soul, with all their mind and with all their strength. However, that didn't mean they were to use their strength against someone. They were to use their strength to be persistent, endure and accomplish what Jesus commissioned them to do. They were to strengthen themselves in the Lord to finish the race, as Paul wrote. They were not to grow weary or faint in expanding the kingdom of God.
Why would it be so important for the disciple to be able to persist, endure and accomplish what Jesus commissioned them to do? Because Jesus came to inherit the world and all the inhabitants.
Jesus is the prefect definition of meekness and receiving the blessing of inheriting the earth. In Matthew 28, He tells His disciples, "All authority has been given to Me…" That was not an arrogant statement. Jesus earned the authority He operated in. He managed His authority with love, compassion, and meekness.
I was so excited to see the second phrase of the definition of "earth" in the Greek as written in Matthew 5:5, "by extension a region". Jesus' meekness earned Him the blessing of inheriting the earth. He earned being the ruler of every part of the world through His meekness. He backed down from a fight He could have won. He was innocent.
He could have slipped through the hands of the priests guards in the Garden of Gethsemane. He could have defended Himself while in the mock trial the high priests put on. He could have stopped the whipping and the thorns being beaten onto His scalp. He could have displaced Pilot. He could have gotten Himself off of the cross. But He didn't. He demonstrated meekness again and again. Therefore, He earned the right to rule our world; the ground, the land, the world and all the occupants.
Why was it so important for the disciples, especially Peter, who cut off the ear of the high priests commander in the Garden of Gethsemane, to learn meekness? Peter was going to need to understand winning the world and all its occupants wasn't going to come through a war, because of the sword. It was coming through an earned right to rule. Jesus had earned the right to rule. Each disciple would have to do the same.
Thankfully, you and I are never going to have to endure the cross. However, we are going to have to earn the right to speak into people's lives. We are going to have to back down from a battle we know we could win and listen. We are going to have to speak words of wisdom and grace. We are going to have to make a way for others to learn the truth. It isn't going to be through an argument.
Father, I desire to operate in meekness. Even though I learned the concept years ago, I want to make sure I use it every time meekness is needed. I pray for wisdom and courage. I pray for trust in Your plan and the outcome. I pray I would see winning some battles will be through meekness. Help me to discern when meekness is needed and when I need to speak truth in love in Jesus' name amen.
